This happens all the time. The best reps can make the worst managers and the worst reps can often be great at management because they know the pitfalls and help navigate out of them. Same reason why players in pro sports canโt be great coaches. Look at mike singeltary. Guy was top 5 all time at LB but couldnโt coach worth a lick. Itโs important to know why someone wants to be in management aside from career progression.ย

The top rep at my company ended up taking on a leadership role and it was a fucking disaster. The guy could sell his ass off but couldn't mentor/train whatsoever. He also had a big ego on him that certainly didn't help the situation. He eventually moved back into a sales role.ย

I've seen that story play out before. ย Can't say I agree with moving back.ย

I was that rep. Got promoted to lead the team I was on and hated every second of it. 25% of the team left immediately because they didn't like me (haters gonna hate). Had to put a guy I loved who with a kid on a way on a PIP. Spent most of my time in BS internal meetings and dealing with minor squabble (why do they have a desk closer to the window I've worked here longer, etc.). Left the company in <1 year and will never go back to management.ย

my previous SM with a prototypical example of this. Could sell really well, horroble manager. He had 14 people leave his team in 1 year. Team should have been 9 people
