Take the offer?

I recently received a job offer from a company starting to grow at a pretty quick clip. The opportunity seems like it would be a good move for me.

However, there were some red flags when talking about compensation. The recruiter said the OTE was $170K with a 50/50 split, but then the VP of sales said that the actual OTE was $205K. When I asked if the OTE would be $102K because of the updated OTE, they said no because they budgeted for the $170K but expected to make the $205K.

The second red flag was they did not share the commission plan with me right away. Instead, they said I would see it when I signed up for my benefits, but after prying a bit more, they explained how the commission plan worked.

The third red flag was they still cannot show me the cost or what benefits are offered.

I forgot to add that this would be slight, but in my base and there is no 401k. I am considering the offer because I think the product is great, and the company is headed in the right direction in growth and funding. Stupid to even consider this offer?

I think it's pretty typical for companies to not share the comp plans before you're an employee... The treat that as confidential

Which is why it's always a good idea to reach out to other reps before you sign an offer.

This sounds a lot like the company I started with earlier this year (and am still with). I decided to take the risk because in my previous role was the growth opp for my personal career was 0 and this company had that potential wide open. We don't have a 401k and the benefits aren't as great but for me, the career growth outweighted staying in a "dead end" job for the benefits.

To be clear, with this newer job, I do make a bit more base wise than my previous so I have the means to regularly contribute to a 401k and pay for my healthcare without having to adjust my lifestyle too much.

Same here.ย  My new job is a 1 year old start up. I know 401k is in the pipeline but we are still a newer company. Have doubled in size since I joined 8 months ago.ย

I never had an employer share a compmplan upfront.ย
