Taking a Lunch

Saw the thread asking if we're able to detach on a vacation, but I wanted to take it a step further.

How many of you are actually able to take a lunch and detach for an hour in the day?

I feel if you give yourself something to do (ie. work out, go for a walk) you're definitely more apt to commit to it.

Personally, I find myself delaying my lunch until it's about 2-3pm and then it's just too late.

I end up taking lunch probably twice a week and even then I'm usually only away from my desk for 20-30 minutes.

Curious how others operate!

our company's head of culture and people gets mad at us if we dont block a lunch break on our calendars. She also encourages us to go offline during it. Its been a nice change from my previous company.ย

I had a company do this but it was because they told us if we worked through lunch, theyโ€™d have to pay us, and wanted to avoid that - I thought that was super weird, because Iโ€™d gladly work through lunch unpaid when I need to, rather than fall behind.ย

Don't get me wrong, if I get a call from a prospect during lunch, I usually take it. I don't respond to emails or slack though. They only expect us to work 7 hours each day and we are able to make our own hours as long we get our work done. I know this is not normal. Needless to say they have developed a great culture and loyalty.ย

That does sound like a really nice way to go about things. Shoutout to your company, sounds like an actively healthy environment!

Its a tech startup. I came from a big corp last year where it was not like that at all. I honestly feel way more productive here.ย

I have a calendar block every day for lunch, but that almost always gets booked over. I normally run to the kitchen, make something quick, and run back.ย

Iโ€™m all over the place with lunch.

Often, I skip it entirely so I donโ€™t have to break focus.

Same here. Thatโ€™s me on most days. Rather eat something light at my desk than voluntarily fall out of the groove Iโ€™m in.ย

I try to run an errand to make myself pull away, but I often end up making a grilled cheese and munching in front of the computer.

When you say errand, do you mean like go hit the store to pick something up? Feel like physically detaching yourself is a good way to mentally detach. Smart and productive at the same time!

Again, thatโ€™s smart - when I get the opportunity to take a lunch I just kinda chill out. Iโ€™ll have to try that out.ย

Fair enough - hard to detach when youโ€™re thinking about everything youโ€™re about to do in an hour. Props to those who can!

Lunch is more โ€œshoving food in my face and hoping no one callsโ€ than it is a moment to step away and enjoy something.ย

I'm always in front of the computer eating something. It's when I go through my newsletters and random internal emails/slacks. I'd love to get in a better habit of doing something though and actually unplugging!ย

I attempt to block out lunch time and after for a workout and to transition the kids back into their afternoon of remote learning when they come back from their morning pod, doesnt always work and i shift a lot of things around but try to consistently get away for 30-60 all 5 days a week for mental wellness

I donโ€™t have kids so I canโ€™t fully relate - but that sounds like it forces you to take that break. Props to you for managing both!

TBH I find it refreshing to eat in front of the comp and get done with "routine" shit like responding to emails/slack vs. the more thoughtful work. Helps me clear out the day so I can focus on things like bath time w/ the baby! :)

I'll do something similar at times. Super quick lunch (or none) and take a short break to hit the ping pong table with a coworker! Get the blood flowing!
