Tbh, the California state income tax isn't the big factor that hurts. It is getting 45% withheld.

I am all for a flat tax. When I was young I worked in retail banking and would see all these people coming in with "refunds" of THOUSANDS of dollars over and above what they paid in. That's not a refund anymore, that's a paycheck from Uncle Sam!

If you're in the US, I think you can pay less taxes if you live in Puerto Rico.
I'm in Canada and I think if I become a resident of Panama and lose my Canadian residency, I won't have to pay any income tax.

Wouldn't you pay taxes in Panama though ? It would be less taxes than in Canada but you would also be giving up free healthcare, paid maternity/paternity leave, etc. At least I'm guessing you would. Honestly I don't know much about the subject.

Taxes. . .

Good for us because it provides protection, roads, and overall necessary services our country requires.

Not so good because it can take close to 40-50% income annually, not considering investment gains.

That said, there are really strategic ways to save and park that money so you never get taxed again on the gains and on withdrawals. Oh that $ can be liquid too, so when you have a poopoo quarter, you're still fine.

I call it fiscal rape - don't get me wrong, I am happy to give when I see it is going to the right causes but I really don't... or at least not most definitely not to the degree that I am paying. My last tax return had me seriously thinking about moving to a state without income tax.

If taxes went to actually improving the city for everyone, I don't think anyone would complain. I'm fine with my taxes going towards community improvements/policing/hospitals/services for children and the elderly. Unfortunately, most of the money collected goes to bloated public sector salaries/pensions/benefits, worthless leftist initiatives (at least in Canada,) and for able bodied people to be able to sit around on their asses playing video games and get paid for it.

I try my best not to think about the gross amount as my commission, I see the big number and forecast what it will actually be after tax.  It is what it is, and you really only made the post-tax amount.  It's hard to swallow but shit ain't changin!

The people who get the stim cheques won't have to repay it...let's be real, a lot of people who collected those barely made enough money to see any real taxes taken off in the first place (min wage retail/food service workers...) It'll be people like us who have been busting our asses the entire time who see even more taxes come off to pay for this shit.
