Tech Dumpster Fire vs Your Personal Life

How are y'all keeping the tech industry shit show from impacting your personal life?

I know that sales is always ups and downs even in a good economy. I've had bad months or quarters and been able to shake it off. But with the way things have been going for the last six months it's been hard for me. I can relax on the weekend and not think about work but every weeknight I'm just grouchy and miserable. Another day of constant rejection, a perpetual grind of prospecting, bad news about how my company is struggling, doing layoffs, missing company goals, I'm missing my own quota, etc.

I put on the mask and do my best to keep the energy positive during my interactions with prospects or peers but does anyone have any advice on not letting the turmoil of SaaS sales in 2023 grind you down? Do any of y'all have good strategies for turning off the computer and turning off your work brain at the end of the day?

If any of y'all suggest meditation, yoga, exercise or some other generic approach to stress relief you are wasting your keystrokes.

Is the struggle of selling SaaS in 2023 affecting your home life?

I'll preface this by saying I am an adult and responsible for a family and children but my answer is: Weed and videogames with a side of pickup volleyball/softball.

You don't get to do that shit everyday but when you do it's a mini vacay. Also, don't you dare have your notification on any of your devices after 5p (whenever you clock out) and don't fucking look until you get in the office/boot up the computer at home for work.

Ganja days are behind me, but beer and vidya certainly aren't. Once the wife and kids go to bed, I take a couple of hours to myself enjoying both.

All is being impacted, including myself for the ups and downs on my conversion rate that may get up to 150% payout of my sales down to Zero%.
Just try to have some really good isolation between the work and your personal life, lock your PC and your work phone ,get engaged more with your family matters and finally ask frequently for long time vacations by utilizing your annual portion and get em for at least +1 week.
Hope that helps!

You're right. a proper vacation would probably help. I've had some 3 day weekends but i'm overdue for a week off.

OK. But how? Anything intentional you do that keeps you from reviewing your open opportunities in your head as you lay awake at night?

with time you learn that your job is not everything. Its something, but there are many somethings in your life which take priority over your job.
That said, of course people think about their job, but if you're obsessing over it, perhaps sales isn't for you. I don't mean that negatively, just that the goal is not to think about your job 24/7. Think about it enough to stay motivated and the find something else to take it over.

@BlackVNeck Find something you are also passionate about and put your mind to that when you're not in work mode. If you had all the money in the world what would you do?

You can answer here and maybe we can help you determine something you could be doing if it not obvious to you just from thinking of the question.

Sitting on the back porch with a pour of whiskey and a good cigar is how I decompress. But, yeah, the economic situation is definitely impacting home life. I've lost that swagger, and I've got a constant worry sitting in the back of my mind about money and the economy and all of that.

Just curious as to why yoga/meditation/exercise is not a good suggestion here. Getting out and busy is a great way to clear your head and fill your brain with something else.

That said, seriously step away once you're done. Control what you can control at work, which is your process. Also while there, do your best to avoid the doom cycle gossip at work. Nobody needs that stuff in their head taking up space.

I won't say I don't have nights where I wake up at 3 am and my brain decides it's a great time to resolve every issue I've been having (certainly I do) but knowing that I've done what I can do and I'm prepared settles most night anxiety.

And for those hours outside of work: do you have a hobby or some other way to keep busy? Something that can take up positive space in your head?

Why not let your personal life spill over into your professional life? Be so happy outside of work that your employer doesn't bother you. Employers have made it clear that their people don't matter and the almighty dollar comes first. Why let someone that sees you as an expendable resource impact your personal life?

Its hard to say, money doesn't cure all problems, but sometimes a deal not going through makes life a lot more stressful

Iโ€™m not very good at turning off, but I do make an effort.

When all else fails, I just โ€œkeep rowingโ€. Itโ€™s worked out so far. Iโ€™ve been lucky so Iโ€™m not inviting shit I canโ€™t control.

If I was a proper adult, Iโ€™d grab a book to read.

A couple episodes of Seinfeld will take you back to simpler time and nothing to laugh at.

I put all my work away at 4:30 or 5pm. I log into to Salesfarce at 7:30 am but donโ€™t start till 8 or 8:30. I go to the gym or do yoga everyday, that way I feel like I have accomplished something important. I use edibles at night for sleep and watch stand up comedy shows. Careful with the edibles though nothing worse than being too high and thinking about work, ugh the worst! Try and have a trip planned so you have something to look forward to. There is more to life than this job . The job could go away at anytime and itโ€™s not your fault. Iโ€™ve seen managers โ€œ manage people out of the business โ€œ and then they are shocked when they get canned. Itโ€™s not the end of the world. I stress out for sure , but these are some of my strategies.

Yesterday I:

- Went into the office with a torn ACL to put out an internal dumpster fire
- Spent multiple hours dealing with my champion before he presents to his internal global team on us.
- Woke up at 2AM to a prospect in Africa calling me to update me (good update, bad timing)
- Just landed in Chicago, and Iโ€™m off to Asia and Europe for two weeks for work.

I do not have a personal life right now and am fucking exhausted. However, my career / sales role is the best itโ€™s ever been. But Jesus Christ globlal sales at a fast moving series A is exhausting.

Iโ€™m not selling SAAS , wether that is good or bad is probably depending on the person lol. But I will say dealing with dumbstruck fires is not a SAAS only thing, Iโ€™m constantly chasing my own tail try Ling to fix issues while another pops up

Has massive growth ever led to mental breakdown? I have been hustling since 17 years old chasing to strive for success doing odd jobs and unintentionally ended up with Edtech K12 Sales as my first official sales job - A toxic culture with no employee respect eventually me to switch after 18 months. Since reps in Edtech are highly valued, had no option but to continue in Edtech sales. This time it was higher education segment, things looked good in the first few month but slowly it started adapting methodologies like the old Edtech since the management was changed. I decided to move out and switch to B2B SaaS. After 13 months of learning & success, my aspirations werenโ€™t matching with the growth vision shared by my manager and ended up being desperate to switch. Got to a AM-Inside Sales role with a 50% hike. Guess what? It led to my mental break down since the culture is pathetic. In entire journey, all challenges never affected my performance but l am losing the spark to glow and hustle eventually. While I plan to switch, a token of guilt is still alive. The experiences have made me far better and strong as a BDR but blank about the next steps in my career. Thanks for reading. Do share your thoughts.
