Tech sales career path guidance (applicable to everyone really)

hey savage wilderbeasts.. hope you are all keeping well and good!

I have had a handful of interviews now, in roles of SDR/BDR and also AE! I have another one on Monday, so I am feeling confident!
The reason for this post though, is to explain the following;

My passion lies with climate tech, I want to help the world by helping companies to reduce their carbon emissions by selling them carbon accounting software simply put.

The problem is, that here in the UK, climate tech space is still in its infancy and so, climate tech companies are hiring scientists/fundraising specialists and other non sales jobs... in the main, so my skills are fairly useless in this space currently so it seems.

My question to you is this - Should I be making a move into 'tech sales' now anyway, in a role that will be available in another sector, so that I can keep searching and learning to be ready when the Climate tech market takes off properly ??

I think it's an option, but also, thinking which sector would be most advantageous to me, I am thinking tech recruitment, to give me a great viewpoint of all the different tech companies, and I have an AE interview with a tech recruitment software company on Monday... the guy reached out to me seeming keen, I had initially applied for a BDR role... He emailed me saying we can also look at AE as your CV fits the bill for this role too.

thoughts appreciated as always fellow freaks x🎰🤠🤠🤠🎉😘😘😘

Great work on aligning your CV to level up. Every sales position I’ve ever held is AT WILL. So when companies label you as such you reciprocate that. Your attachment to the company you move to is AT WILL.

Take the move - further build out your resume with a new title. Then you have more to show when you move to your dream job in climate tech.

AT WILL in the sense that they could release at you any moment and you should feel in your own power that you may also leave them at any moment.

Just my opinion but I don't lump tech recruiting in with tech sales. It's more recruiting than tech. However, it's certainly closer to tech than where you are now so step in the right direction.

Go all in on the AE role if it turns out to be a hawt offer. Stay a year then you can be an AE anywhere you want. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, that job in tech sales will help you get the skills and resume you need to pursue your dream job when that becomes available.

You're preparing yourself, and that's a step in the right direction.

If you are laying the foundation for the future. it doesn't hurt, in fact it probably helps, to gain more experience in software and selling into the companies you eventually want to sell the climate software into.

yes make the move!
its just a smart decision to get into tech. Maybe Im bias but there is so much room to move around once your "in" but getting in seems to be the hard part.

To answer your question, I would say yes. But look for leaders in the industries that interest you and who you would want to work for/grow with.

Look for a role where you sell to the same persona that you would in your desired role at the highest average deal size that you can. Ideally stay 2+ years with good quota attainment. See where the market is then.

Thank you Jeets, I have just had an interview yesterday with a recruitment tech company, it went really well, through to the next round with clear next steps and agreed next round on Thursday … the big benefit to this is that the company specifically sells the tech to tech companies, so I will be in a position to know all of the tech company’s from the inside … exactly that, thinking at least 2 years perhaps 3 then see what’s out there, plus I got on really well with the hiring manager.

Next stage is with global head of sales

Then ceo

Then culture fit meeting with hr

Then perhaps a demo call
