I'm curious to hear what makes it soulless? From TO and never been to Van but I keep hearing that and I can't quite pinpoint why some people say that... it looks beautiful to me.
It is extremely beautiful aesthetically. The soulless part comes from the people. This is only my experience, but I found most people to be quite closed off, very materialistic, and obsessed with being/looking wealthy. There is also a ton of corruption.
It's a stunning place. You'll get off your plane/boat/car, look around and be amazed.
Then you'll try and go to a bar/club/party in general, or order food, or walk around the busiest places downtown. You'll realize nobody talks to anyone else, its impossible to make new friends, and that everyone is cold and closed off.
Don't get me wrong, Vancouver people are (relatively) nice, especially if you're not from here. But all your interactions are skin-deep. It's an unusually shallow and superficial place. The city has no real background, identity or character, it's just situated in a beautiful place.
**Oh and it's cripplingly expensive. It's expensive by any major NA city's standards, but especially so for locals. Vancouver costs just as much as Toronto, 2nd tier only to cities like LA/SF/NY/Miami - but the incomes/jobs are nowhere close to as highly paid as TO OR any of those cities. So, it costs just as much or more, but you make 70% or less. Horrible combo, for imo, a horrible place.
If you have $10M+ come retire here. If you don't? Stay far far far away. I HATE it here, and have wanted to leave for as long as I can remember. The right opportunity finally came around, and I'm saying deuces.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Vancouver is a great city if you're loaded and just want to enjoy the outdoors or living in your bubble somewhere on the coast or in the mountains. If you're not loaded or value an enriching social life/a city filled with culture, stay away.
