The Double Tap - Yay or Nay?

I'm attending a certification course and one of the instructors just encouraged 150 people to start double tapping (Call one time, if they don't pick up, then immediately hang up and call back)when dialing and to be prepared to go "Oh goodness I meant to leave a voicemail, but while I have you on the phone..."

I for one think it's something that can easily be sussed out as BS, especially since 149 new sales reps have committed to start doing it. Does anyone agree or disagree?

Do you double tap when cold calling?

It happened to me yesterday. The rep also used a local dialer.

Thought there was a family emergency or something happening. Then when I answered, they said "Hey Chunk, what's up". No intro, no idea who they were, nothing.

I hate this shit. If you are good at your job you dont need to use this type of BS to get people on the phone.

Triple tap a double tap. That’s the next logical step. Eventually each new sales rep calls 1 person per day, unlimited times.

I have done this on a few occasions, and most of the time they pick up the second time. I think its more about them thinking its a scam call and when you call immediately again, chances are you aren't a robot and they pick up.

I don't bullshit and lie about it though, that part is stupid. I also wouldn't adopt this as a regular practice.

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
Similar to daddy @OpalTiddyChurger I've used this before, gets past the feeling of it being a robodial. I don't do it for every prospect, just C-levels who I've already tried to reach and now are 👌 for our ICP

Well guilty confession, when my CTO asked me to make 100 calls per day, you bet your ass I started to double-tap.

Trifling, I know

A double-tap, at least as far as I know it, is when you call, skip the voicemail, and immediately send an email to the prospect.

I have my phone set to silence all unknown callers. You're not increasing your chances by dialing me twice.

Good way for me to verbally abuse you. I feel like this is an approach people who sell life insurance use. Probably why I got mine elsewhere.

I would NOT appreciate this were I on the receiving end...

Seems grimey

This would annoy the hell out of me. It’s not the worst strategy in the world to do this once in a blue moon to a top prospect, but to make it an everyday strategy is BS.

I'm really not gonna lie and say I'm not guilty of it. I've done it, not proud of it, but try to do it as little as possible (or not at all if I can). Hope that at least makes me on the lower end of a-hole

Cold prospecting I might do this very sparingly. Someone im in an active deal cycle with and owes me an update/action item? Im double tapping their office phone and then cell.

I do it to set myself apart from robo callers. But I don’t go 2 full rings. I cut the first ring short and then call back and if they are like “wtf” I say my headset wasn’t working and I didn’t hear it ringing. Immediate disarm.

Depends - just trying like a normal person works better. Colleagues of mine ring (well apparently) five times in a row with no answer…just call once, no answer, call an hour later. Call as though you’d want to be called ay

I used to do with every single prospect for most of my 3-year sales career and can confirm that it works. I actually would call once with local dialer on, then turn it off and call back immediately. Definitely an a-hole move, but it helped both connection rate and number of meetings booked.

I don't do it anymore because we got a new dialer, and I set it as my cell number. So now my goal is after bombarding them for my number to say "Maybe: my name" from my emails.

I'm also becoming less of an asshole now that I'm getting older and more into my sales career as an AE

Once I had a manager tell about double-tapping as if it was this brilliant new strategy he came up with.

All I could think was...that's it? You just call them twice? That's what I did in my first ever sales job back when I sucked.
