The hero we didn’t know we needed

Unless it's required and I really want the job I don't write cover letters.  Hell if I'm asked to answer a bunch of open text questions when submitting my resume I've just stopped applying and look elsewhere.

What's your take?

Yes! to no cover letters. This requirement has been around since the 50s. It’s duplicate work. It’s an extra hurdle. They don’t weed out the serious from the unserious. They don’t get read. They serve no purpose, other than to deter qualified, talented candidates who already understand all of this.

Cover letters are ridiculous, unnecessary and pointless.

I never sent the cover letter nor will I do it. I attach my resume if it’s a mandatory field.

This guy is a hero indeed. And I honestly hope he has reach. His approach to interviewing is simple, straightforward, and should be adopted.

Hiring has gotten so convoluted. I think a part of that is too much tech/too many platforms.

All that's needed is what this man has laid out.

Exactly. It doesn't need to be so hard. Back to keeping it simple.

I always include them when possible. It falls into the category of “it doesn’t hurt” especially if you’re a good writer.

Haven’t written one in years. Back of my head keeps wondering if I’m missing out but I haven’t felt the seen any positive uplift compared to my job search from friends who do it.

Only thing they missed is the standard HR, dont see how to get past those in the process

they are super annoying to write too, I never know if mine is too long? too short? content is good? Not having to do one is such a relief when applying.

attaching your res and linkedin, then having to fill out work history that was half-ass pulled from your rez will stop me in my tracks, and its always in an application after I spoke with a recruiter who reached out to me

last few hiring process I've gone through have barely required resumes...thank god for networking and giving off an illusion of success i guess lol.

Never write cover letters, if there's a job I'm interested in and it requires one I double-check to see if that job is posted somewhere else, and if that other posting doesn't require a cover letter I apply there.
