The job market.... is it true?

Honestly I was looking for a new place to call home but Im not really putting in the extra effort even though I know its super competitive out there. Im just tired of looking for a job.

By extra effort I mean like cold calling, cold email/video, etc. At least thats what I've been seeing on a few linkedin posts from "Sales leaders"...

Im not doing that BS, im just applying lol.

Should I be doing those extra efforts?

I think the extra effort is worth it, but I actually landed my current gig with a simple application.

The caveat is I had some specific skills/experience that they really wanted that not many have.

Make sense. In the past I did the whole sending video email to the manager but I just hate the fact that I have to do that stuff lol

Depends on how good you are and where you're applying. It's very tough finding great sellers right now, as they're being taken care of by their current companies, or they are gravitating towards more stable companies.
I saw the same dynamic during the COVID crash, our startup struggled finding salespeople, but my colleagues in Salesforce said the talent pool for applicants had never been better.
So if you're really good and have a solid reputation, there are a ton of startups that are interested in hiring you. If you're looking at stable companies, you will see a lot more competition.

Usually I like to apply directly on the website

It's always hard work packed with luck.

Sometimes you get an awesome opportunity with minimal effort. Sometimes it takes you to move mountains to even get the smallest of gigs.

If luck isn't working out then hardwork it is. If hard work isn't working out then smart work it is. If smartwork isn't working out then luck it is.

yes you should. i really dont think its effective to just apply randomly to a job posting. i dont know a single person that has found a job that way recently.

How would you recommend going about it? Ive seen multiple Sales VPs and managers on linkedin say they dont like getting DMed about it so the messaging has been very mixed lately.

This is something I dont have a TON of experience in but when what worked for me was I applied to the job posting on linked in, tried to figure out who at the company would be my boss, then DM that person directly and let them know I applied and would love to chat with them about the role if thats something they would be open to.

Hitting “easy apply” on LI is a complete waste. Not even worth the 3 clicks it takes to apply.

So if you want a new job you’ll need to put in the extra effort.

Are you getting any responses by just applying? I suspect the answer is no. If you really want a new job, you're going to have to put in some effort.
Best way is always by networking. Have you reached out to former colleagues elsewhere?

Calling hiring managers, reaching out on LI, finding current reps on LI and asking them about their experience - there’s a lot you can do.

It depends. If you’re unemployed, you’re playing yourself.

If you’re in a job which you’re happy with and you earn good and you’re just open to opportunities then just applications may seem ok

If you have recent short stints on your resume and/or have unknown companies on your resume, yes you're going to have to go above and beyond to get interviews. Probably even more true for remote roles. Kind of the spot I'm in right now: there's not much local, I can't relocate in the near term, I have on paper a spotty resume (working for startups can do that), so I'm forced into the ultra-competitive space of remote AE roles. I'm at 11 months unemployed right now. It's hard.

I’ve never ended up getting an offer that came through a simple application

It’s always been through networking, connecting with sellers, being proactive with hiring managers

Build a network of salespeople even after you get the next role, having a bunch of peers to call the moment you get news is invaluable
