The Monotony of It All

As a working professional life can get pretty stale/boring... especially when we get caught up in the monotony of our roles and day to day activities.

I feel like sometimes sales has periods where you feel on fire, you're excited, motivated and crushing it (or getting there)... BUT on the flip side, there are times where ti feels blah, you go through the motions, and you might not even feel like doing the work.

How do you overcome the mundane tasks, going through the motions, and getting over the hump? How do you make everyday feel different?

Sales is similar to sports - everyone sees the 3 hours you play on the field Sunday, but games are won / lost during late night film study, two-a-day workouts, weekday game planning, etc.. All of the "boring, mundane" crap is what sets teams up to execute when the whistle blows.

The same is true for sales. The best reps I've ever worked were relentless in finding ways to get better: they listened to their calls, read books, prospected endlessly, ensured their SFDC was up to date on weekends so their week was free for selling, took the initiative to get training on their own, etc.ย

You have to view your sales skillset as something to be honed and tuned. The monotony is where the millions are made :)

Everything you do during the 'blah' moments is what makes it possible for you to have the 'BYAH!' moments. Practice might suck, but winning is an unmatched feeling.

Total pro answer here. The exciting, motivating, on fire moments stop feeling that way if they're all you have.

Exactly! Sales is typically with ups and downs. The good sales people still do what they have to do when their in the down part.ย

For me it's all worth it when the commission check hits. I have a post-it note with how much I can make when I hit certain thresholds. It's a good reminder

Set micro goals that force you to push yourself on either a results or effort side of things. Hitting a goal is almost always exciting. Also reward yourself for hitting said micro goals.

Side note, I find working at a company you love with people you like greatly reduces the periods of "blah". In the past when a company has done something that supremely disappoints me is when motivation falls drastically and I do begin going through the motions.

I love this. Whenever I am feeling unmotivated, I do my expense reports and ride the small wave of accomplishment to the next task, haha

I always tell my team, "don't ride the rollercoaster" attack your career as series of well executed processes for consistent performance.ย  Too often "the mundane" feels mundane because we always chasing the "highs" of "closing" and "winning".ย  ย Sales, like anything is a job - it can be massively rewarding, but like anything to do it at a top level, consistently requires a "mundane" level of dedication.ย

Sometimes those "blah" moments make your good days feel even better. If every day were great, we wouldn't appreciate them quite as much.ย

If I get those unmotivated days though, I sometimes jump on meetings with my coworkers and we just fuck around for a bit. Since they don't happen often, it's exciting when they actually do. Also, the pandemic and all has ruined whatever little social life I had before.ย

Sometimes I just push my mundane work aside and work on a little side project instead. A sheet that will help my company organize something better. A document with objections that my manager would like. Whatever that gets my brain working on something else for a while.ย

Honesty. Saving money for big splurges. What else is life for? Success allows me to do the things I want outside of work.

I got on the War Room to read horror stories and feel better about myself.ย

In all seriousness though, im a big fan of setting 6 month and annual goals and working back from those. If I know what I want to get done and have a solid road map on how to get there it make the mundane feel like an important step to get where I want to go.

There are alwaysย  going to be "blah" moments in any career, so making those an important part of process makes them a little more tolerable for me

You couldn't have said it better.ย

Maybe rethink what is making it so tedious and try out a new tactic?ย

Testing, as well as trial and error, give you something to think about day to day!ย

Are you in my head?! Post June has been so hard to get my head back In the game. Sometimes I put more funny vs work updates on my LinkedIn or write a mailer to my โ€œhouse accountsโ€ with a funny ending .. just to see if they even read them. Itโ€™s the small stuff .. but I find enjoyment in the absurd things and have a British sense of humour so might just be me laughing at my own jokes? Still, makes me feel better :)

I write down a "win" every day. Could be a closed deal on our team, could be a project I finished (or even started), could be a great meeting with an AE on my team.

Feels good to win, no matter the size.
