When Elon Musk decided to build SpaceX, he needed rocket scientists to come work with him. But it's not like you can post the job on Indeed. ๐
So he did what any good salesperson would do: cold call rocket scientists.
He had this script that he practiced and used hundreds of times: โIโm Elon Musk, Iโm an internet billionaire, I founded PayPal and X.com. I sold X.com to Compaq for 165 million dollars in cash and I could spend the rest of my life on a beach drinking Mai Tais, but I decided that humanity needs to become a multi-planetary species to survive and I want to do something with my money to show that humanity can do that and I need Russian rockets and thatโs why Iโm calling you.โ
Not the sexiest, slickest pitch. But he did manage to convince Jim Cantrell to leave NASA and join him. And 20 years later.... it's the most important cold call in history.
