The real frustrating part is that there are so few good sales orgs out there and for the good ones....

They rarely need to hire new AEs.

I am trying to be picky on my next AE role since I do not want to join some churn and burn shop. It sucks that the market is already crap for SaaS sales roles. What sucks even more is when you are moving along far in a process with a company and do research on them:

  • RepVue is tearing them a new one on ratings
  • You notice that not that many AEs there have long tenures
  • You realize that there is so much bad stuff out there like how regularly that company lays people off

Like it is as if you:

  1. Luck out or are a high quality candidate early in your career and get into a large brand name that takes care of its workers, being set for the most part moving forward or....
  2. You are stuck playing this gambling game for the rest of your career where you hope that the next company you join is not a churn and burn shop.

On a more positive note, cold calling managers has helped me book 5 new meetings for next week. Fight on.

If its any consolation, Ive been where you are and you are right. It absolutely sucks.

I will say I’ve been at my current company over a year now and it was a company I settled for because the job market was as such that top tier companies i used to be able to get an interview with just wouldnt call me back…

I had to take a step back on base salary but i managed to mitigate the hit through negotiation. Onboarding / training was pretty non-existent but I had a colleague really help me here.

With a lot of frustration and stress, I kept at it and grinded, often questioning what am I doing here, etc.

Fast forward to now, I’m absolutely crushing my targets and already surpassed quota for the quarter, im expecting a raise on my base salary, the product is actually pretty good, the people are great and I’m fully remote.

I still apply to jobs but now I can afford to be picky. I had an interview the other day for a role where my base and ote would be almost double and I totally sabotaged it because I didnt like the territory for this new role and its hard to wrap my mind around going back to zero in terms of pipeline, learning new product and starting from scratch all over again.

I’ve seen a lot of my peers that are less experienced / skilled, land great gigs with good established companies. For whatever reason, it has never worked out that way for me. But what I was able to do is find a company that was a little shakey but with tons of white space / opportunity and I’m finally in a situation where I can win and thrive.

You’ll never avoid the bullshit entirely. You just need to have a good sense to know how finite is the bullshit before you get into the pocket and can see some upside.

Now that I say this, watch my pipe implode on itself next quarter leaving me in a bad spot. Shouldnt be the case though.

I am so happy for you man. This happened to me at my most successful role to date and I am the same way. I cannot seem to land gigs at these world-class companies but I am changing that now for my job hunt. Recently, I managed to land a few interviews at the Top 20 SaaS companies and if you like, I can share that resource with you in a future post. Anyways, good stuff man and keep crushing it.

Most companies don't invest anymore in sales training. Its either on your own or OTJ. That makes it tough. I benefited from some excellent training early on in my career. But I have also invested in myself as well. I have a stack 3 feet high of sales & business books (most of which I have actually read!).

Invest in yourself cause no one else will!

And watch good videos and keep up with the few sales voices that know what they are talking about

I've started to look at new opps myself and am strategizing on my own outreach for roles I apply too. I'm okay with my current role but for me realizing what I need in a new role is less of the BS I have internally now. There's always going to be something to deal with, but ideally the less BS is the better the role.

Pricing changes consistently each quarter, product team doesn't share what is being released causing confusion from what we can and can't share with prospects, consistently changing how we pitch ourselves and what materials are used. Misalignment among orgs and teams that doesn't get addressed.

Where are you getting manager numbers to cold call?
I like the initiative, I just feel like it would be tough to get the exact manager you'd be working under...Unless it's a small company.

Every company wants to be (read as "thinks they are") the top sales org in the world. The truth is most are so poorly managed that they are hiring anyone and everyone by lying about OTE and attainment. It sucks having to sort through all the bullshit but occasionally you find the diamond in the dog shit

My problem with these companies (mostly startups) is unreasonable expectations. They want you to book meetings / generate revenue from the first month when they don’t have anything in place like an established product or a different service offering. No support provided whatsoever and they want results. Really not sure what’s going on here.
