Things to save/do before leaving your current job

Hey, there fellow degns! I had a quick question for you all. I am about to transition from one tech giant to another early next month, and I was wondering what things I should be sure to save/keep before making the switch?

Also any recommendations/advice on how to move my 401K & HSA over?

Many thanks, stay hungry you filthy animals!

Save: nothing (except all documents you created, details on your attainment and major logos)
Burn: everything

401k rollover usually only happens when you get to the new job with a new servicer. The transition is easy. Never used an HSA (wife has always had hers before I had one).

I've always saved a copy of my contacts, you never know where people will land if you want to contact them again in the future. I also keep a record of my annual sales budget's, quarterly and performance/actuals to budgets so I have a record for my resume and interviews for future job opportunities. Over the years these accumulate and it's good to have a record.

With regards to your HSA, you can take that with and there is no need to anything with it. It's yours and you can continue to contribute to it if you would like but it won't be pre-tax.

Depending on who your 401K provide is, for example Vanguard or Principle, they have IRA's you can roll it over too. If you work with a financial advisor, they likely have options to roll over to an IRA as well. Be sure to research the options for how much either of these options charge for management fee's, you shouldn't pay over 1%.

I’d recommend rolling your 401k into a Roth IRA/Traditional IRA. You get more flexibility on funds you choose and you can pick low/no fee index funds that may not be available at your new gig in their plan.

Thank you very much for the advice. This is very useful as I am now poor thanks to the crypto markets!

Zero experience with HSA. I've always had a PPO. I don't think it's a hard process though.

HSA: Depending on the provider, you may not be able to roll it over. I left my previous employer with a full deposit in my HSA, and I was allowed to keep it and use it until it was gone, even as I was onboarded with a new provider.

My 401(k) was doing well and is big enough to leave, so I did, and started a new one.

Back up your client list and emails.

Don’t take anything which could be considered proprietary.

Wouldn´t that be proprietary as well?

For my last company, it would have been.  However, anything on my phone (which they allowed me to keep) was not - so all my contacts there remained mine even after access to my corporate email was lost.

depends on where you are going.

When i left one company for another in the same industry i took everything.

All account notes, account plans, meeting notes, talk tracks, emails that worked, my metrics. everything i could get my hands on.

but if you are going to a new industry I would just make sure you grab your commission statements and stuff incase anyone asks you to prove you hit quota or any bullshit like that haha

At my employer, the account plans and meeting notes would have been considered proprietary, and I left those, unless you are talking about the framework/templates, in which case, I agree, take those.  Building new ones when you had ones that worked, sucks.

My sales records (excel sheets) etc., I kept.
