Thoughts on a SaaS org that promotes outbound reps to inbound reps?

I have always worked for orgs who promoted inbound SDRs into outbound BDR roles...however, a friend of mine wanted to make a change in careers and get into SaaS. He ended up getting an outbound BDR role at a company...then they offered him a "next level" role instead as an inbound SDR.......

Am I the only one confused, or is this normal?

My thoughts are, if that is the promotion path and you just let this dude 'skip' to an inbound role, how will he ever be successful as an AE with ZERO clue how to prospect?

Is this promotion path normal?

I said no but I'm also not in SaaS. I've been a hunter for so long it's like my brain can't comprehend not hunting. 🤦‍♀️

To me this makes a lot of sense.

Outbound BDRs get out and hunt and find their own deals. Yes this can be way more difficult but they are putting in the time and effort and sourcing these accounts themselves.

Inbound BDRs are handling the leads that the company has sourced. This is a way higher priority for the company. Lots of money has been used to purchase and source those leads. The organization just wants to make sure the leads are being handled by a quality rep who has cut their teeth in something that maybe was a little more challenging / difficult.

I view this as completely normal, and in my mind makes the most sense.
