Thoughts on calls before and after the normal work hours? 5 before 9, 9 after 5(5:30)?

Not unless it's a deal making call and there's a good reason as to why they can't talk during business hours.

Thank you! The Assessment centre I went through to get my job tried to train us to do this and it never worked. If anything it put people off talking to us. Should have probably put that in the question!

Internal calls and meetings - yes, inevitable in a global org.
Prospecting calls, no way.

I work after 5 on a consistent basis but not normally to call. That being said, given the state of urgency and/or timezone, I make plenty of calls after 5.

What timezones do you call into? Internationally or?

I call throughout the US but primarily California. Alaska and Hawaii pop themselves into my workload a fair amount and I have no problem calling into those after 5. I sit Pacific Time in Oregon. If I get a response from the west coast while I'm still at work before like 6, I'll call immediately while it's hot. And then obviously as needed for clients, employees, etc.

Interesting, being from the UK it's all the same as you know, I only ever ring East coast US due to the time zones. I have had business west coast but it is always either really early or late. Have you sold out of the US?

Never sold across the pond - sold in Canada in my last role but that's the extent of it. Had a team of consultants in India in that role as well.

Decent, if it's not to much, do you have any advice on the initial cold call with an American prospect? I know (heard) it's a different type of selling, more fast-paced and to the point, or have I got that wrong?

To be quite honest with you, I really don't know how to give you any advice as I'm unaware of the standards and etiquette of cold calling in the UK, and thus can't compare.

I have always had better luck between 8:30-9:30am or from 4:00-5:00pm getting ahold of difficult to reach folks. That and double dial.

I do it all the time. If it’s a legit call them I’m all over it.

im in the UK and sell globally, so send me that commission bruv.

I’ve done a call to Australia at 7am and then a 8pm call to California on the same day.

I sell to a group of people that tend to come from shift work, often 7a-7p, so you'll see a lot of them at their desks before 8am. That being said, I still don't do much calling before 9am, but you have to consider that people coming in at 7am likely aren't going to be around (or aren't going to be happy to answer a call) after 3pm or so.

It 100% depends on who you are calling.

Are you calling personal numbers?

or

Are you calling a store?

My answer would be different depending on your audience.

Worked a deal at 11 pm on Memorial Day. I try to keep it within business hours, but revolve around customers and the $. However I do think it's important to set those boundaries so customers do not take advantage of being available 24/7

I will take an inbound call from an account literally any time of day or night. Vacation or no.

I have a problem.

But for outgoing calls, I often work outside of "business hours" because I call on veterinary emergency hospitals, which often operate outside of normal business hours.

What's the issue here?  If it's a deal with decent commish, suck it up and do the calls.  The customers & partners will remember and appreciate it. If it's internal calls - Fing no way

Really depends on the context of the call. If a different time zone then not a problem, or if it is a deal crunching call I will do it. Internal calls - hell no!

The only time I call outside of work hours is when the time is within work hours for the client/prospect's time zone. I've been known to stay until 7p a couple times toward the end of the month to get more west coast opps.

Whatever works, but never forget that there's a human on the other line. If you were in their shoes, would you want to talk work before / after hours?

Gotta pump those numbers up 9-5 doesn’t cut it, 8-6 should be the starting point... C-Suite is typically online even longer.

I think This is industry Specific. As a SAM in the News World, that is a 24/7 gig. I think it's important to set boundaries for your own sanity, but sometimes clients will need you at odd hours. I think its important to use your own discretion.

An emergency on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part....unless OPPS drops the ball lol.

There are situations, like a buyer or relevant team who is in Asia when you are in the US where this is a necessity. Sometimes keeping the deal rolling is more important than protecting your hours.

Depends on your industry and role.

working multiple times zone roles can cause that. Or rather senior sales roles at companies operating across time zones

Back in office I used to call executives (office numbers only) at 8-830 because it was the best time to catch them when they have some time. But I haven't done it since WFH

I have clients who purposefully ask for meetings in the early morning cuz that's the only time they have available. Also international clients/operations so we're on calls 7:30 am or sometimes 7:30 at night depending on the region of the world. Sucks, but whatever the customer wants.

As a caller, I often have to call past my working hours because of pesky timezones, but if anyone called me to try and sell me something past my working hours I would scream internally.
