Time Blocking, Google Calendar and Slack

Hey, I am trying to use calendar blocks to better focus my time. I am finding some challenges doing this and would love to hear how you all do this.

  1. My Google Calendar and Slack are integrated, so I get notified about these blocks and its very distracting. Is there a way to turn off some of these notifications. My work has asked we keep this integration, so the team can see if you're in a meeting or OOO in Slack.
  2. My blocks are visually distracting. Im not sure if I am alone here, but the full calendar is giving me anxiety. Any work around or advice here, maybe colorless blocks?
  3. For those of you who have had success with calendar blocking, what are your insights to make this most effective?

Thank you everyone. Maybe Im over thinking this or missing something but I really want to set myself up for success in my new (and first) full cycle AE role.

Sounds like you need to create your own system since a full cal is anxiety & pings are distracting lol. Go on DND mode on slack and the celly to really focus on the tasks at hand that need your undivided attn

Thank you. I saw his post this morning about journaling and he recommended a specific one. Kevin Dorsey also recommends the same thing. I admire both of them, so I think Ill look in to that. Thank you.

There’s an app called clockwise that helps block off focus time and integrates with Gcal and Slack together.

I choose 3 things I want to accomplish each day and focus on most important first. Helped me feel much more accomplished and whatever time I have left over I learn something, teach something, or connect with someone in my company or space. Sounds elementary but you’d be surprised how much more I’ve accomplished and more prideful at the end of each day as there’s always more to do and never enough time to do it by making lists that never end.

Create a daily/weekly agenda with the time blocks and print it out/ hang it up by your desk.
Anytime you aren't in a meeting, follow your printed agenda.
Alternatively, get a whiteboard calendar and fill it out.
