Time to bring back downvoting?

Hello savages,

I know that I and a few others have mentioned this a few times but it seems without downvoting that there are more spammy posts and comments as well as toxicity in general. I understand we had some idiots who screwed things up by downvoting everything to help themselves but I believe Corp and Sahil chucked them out. What say y'all? If the majority is against bringing it back, I will gladly shut the hell up.

Best,

Brian

Hello my favorite people ๐Ÿค“ HAPPY FRIDAY! Just wondering.. would an ability to flag/report certain users may be interesting to you as an alternative? Obviously, Bravado will review the report to see whether it's against our rules and policy.. but just wondering ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Hmmm. Interesting take, but I could see that being abused as well. I still think the idea we talked about of flagging the post itself for review might be a better solution for the time being - sometimes I have nothing against the user but the post itself may need a look at.ย

I even made a mistake yesterday and become my own worst enemy... didn't see a post in search and accidentally posted a duplicate thread. Things like that can definitely be flagged (thanks for the heads up @funcoupons)

In that scenario flagging me as an individual though may not solve the issue of the duplicate post.ย

However, if someone routinely posts inappropriate comments, then I could see having the ability to report a user as helpful.ย

I need to think on this a bit more.ย

I think if we were flagging habitual offenders, that would be interesting. I don't want to flag @BigMeech , a genuinely awesome member of the community, for a one-time offense.

@CaneWolfย @kiraugaisย  Maybe if you add the flag feature, when you report to the mod team you have to add a brief of why you are flagging? If it is a simple "click to report" I could see that getting spammed potentially but if there is a barrier of sorts (filling out a report) then that may discourage use outside of legitimate reasons and scenarios? Thoughts?

I like this. I also think that you'd have to be an idiot to spam the function that alerts the WR staff...

You would be surprised lol. I think there would need to be some sort of penalty for crying wolf - like if you try to report someone because you want to pass them on the leaderboard, like we saw a few weeks ago with the mass downvote event, then you either get a temporary or permanent ban. That way reporting is only used in severe situations?

But then that would open up the question of what constitutes an acceptable situation to report...

As long as people who post "this" or "+1" as comments can be reported, I'm good.

I donโ€™t mind those people unless they donโ€™t upvote whatever their commenting... in which case, fuck those people.

But I agree. The comment is redundant because that is literally the function of upvoting.

My theory is those comments mainly come from people trying to hit the badges tied to comments on threads they post. I see it the most on certain peoples threads, but once they get the badge then it stops for the most part... unless they are in a tight race on the leaderboard.ย

@kiraugaisย - that may be an easy fix to that problem - stop your own comments on your own post from counting towards badges.ย

The leaderboard is almost an entirely separate subject that could and should warrant its own post. Iโ€™ll make a post about it later... But I think the leaderboards being commission volume based is also problematic... it has been a source of in-fighting since the start...

Shifting the leaderboards so that itโ€™s based on a variety of criteria like average # of upvotes per post for X time period could be a step in the right direction because that incentivizes post quality as opposed to purely post quantity.

What if you de-couple it from commission entirely? Make it like "oscars style". You have most impactful, most engaging, and some other category, and that way only good content has an impact, and spam content/comments do not improve a persons chances?

Basically what corp is doing weekly now anyway with the LI posts reviewing WR threads of the week. What if that becomes the "leaderboard"?

I think anything can be abused, and more than likely someone's feelings are gonna get hurt.ย

Mistakes happen as in BigMeech's example. Simple, easy fix that was brought to their attention without feeling personally attacked. Happens to the best of us.

A personal flag with a comment box as to why I think this person is spamming and isn't gonna stop? I'll flag that shit now.

I'm sure there will be a learning curve but it's necessary.ย

I think the ability flag and report users would be a nice feature that should definitely be implemented but, as others have pointed out, itโ€™s not sufficient in terms of a more nuanced feedback mechanism.

@Bittersweet0326ย gives a good example of this. Even good users are occasionally guilty of making bad, worthless posts... They shouldnโ€™t be deprived of critical feedback to let them know how their post is being received.

Yeah.. that example was me lol. I had no issue with funcoupons pointing it out, and I deleted my post. I had spend a few minutes (but clearly not enough) in the search trying to see if one was made but for whatever reason the keywords I was putting in didn't pull up that post.

I think the keyword thing, as @Coffeesforclosersย said above would have been helpful in that situation.

But even then, mistakes happen. I have no issue getting a downvote or having someone point out I made a duplicate, it helps keep the feed clean.

That has some potential. Iโ€™m not sure if it does enough though. Maybe as an addition? When people are taking away value from the platform I think the community being able to downvote says the most. But then sometimes downvoting doesnโ€™t change anything and thatโ€™s when we could flag or report.

Flagging for inappropriate responses absolutely.ย

How to stop the dreaded duplicate posts, not sure there is an easy answer for that besides maybe keywords that bring up similar posts and dont let you submit a new one until you verify it is different while creating the new post title (take away user error from searching prior, just have it pull up as they type in new post).ย

Flagging users would only make sense to me if it was a user posting very obvious trolls/inappropriate/abusive content. It doesn't make sense for users simply posting things that aren't constructive.ย

I like the idea of downvoting because it's visible to the rest of the community. It shows immediately that that type of post is not appreciated or useful, and hopefully is a signal to whoever posted it to not post that kind of stuff anymore.ย

I like the idea of downvoted comments/posts going to the bottom of the thread/comments page as well.ย
CoorsKing

Agree, but then the question becomes what counts as constructive? Some posts are engaging, but not necessarily constructive so there is a bit of a grey area. And what one user may find constructive may differ from another.

I think it is a bit of a learning curve for sure.ย

Also the downvote is only supposed to be for flagging inappropriate content per the FAQ, it is not an "I disagree" button. I think we need a downvote and a this is shit button. Lol

@BigMeechย I love the idea of a โ€œTHIS IS SHITโ€ button. Doesnโ€™t subtract any commish but adds a healthy dollop of shame. Perfect.

If your post gets 5 โ€œTHIS IS SHITโ€, then your post gets a ๐Ÿ’ฉ tag.

There isn't really a hard definition, you know it when you see it but again, not everyone agrees. I view non constructive as posting one word comments or low effort jokes in serious threads, making irrelevant polls that have no opportunity for discussion, posts that just ask yes or no questions, and posts totally unrelated to sales (the recent thread about someone's landlord comes to mind...)

But I know others will think differently.ย

95% of people do the right thing, and 5% don't. It's always painful making rules to address the 5%'ers that cover 100% of the population.

I'd say you give people the ability to downvote and/or flag comments. If you see it being abused on the admin side, reach out, have an adult-to-adult conversation, and either fix the behavior or revoke privileges

I don't think so. The downvote is a disagree function, no matter how much we try and say it's not.ย

I too am tired of the farmers, but, ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ...

I had a very sour taste in my mouth from a clearly labeled off topic dig at marketing. It is still sitting at -13 votes. While the poll itself has 50+ responses.ย

Even in comments, someone will say "agree" and not vote up the comment at all. This way they stay in the leaderboard gaining commission, but keep others down.ย

So think of that game - where you can just downvote, reply, and you've essentially locked a +2 in the leader board.

Also... Look at the post itself. As of writing 5 upvotes 16 votes. 8 comments. I'm just saying I thought there was a bit problem (none I could find) it is an engagement issue.

Looking at fixing that as well, a potential solution being explored is commenting automatically triggers an upvote on the OP.ย

You wouldn't want it to counteract a downvote. If somebody posted awful and the comments were all like "wow, this is f'd up," you wouldn't want to reward the poster.
