Time Zones and Early Meetings

My company is predominantly East Coast which means a lot of meetings starting at 7am or 8am or me. I have small kids and used to have to get them to school which i will again now that light is on at end of pandemic tunnel.

Has anybody been successful in implementing some type of messaging or rule to make no meetings prior to 9am without outright declining the meeting?

Side note, whatever happened to 9-5? How is 8-5 now and when did it change?

I would just block off that time on your calendar so it can't be booked over. "Dropping kids off at school" from 8-9am and if it's urgent tell people you can take the call from the car.

+1 on this. I'd do the same. Also if your boss insists, then maybe you can cover that hour up at the end of the day

I tend to see it more as big meetings with 20+ people, and all hands, where the care for looking at blocks and scheduling assistant is out the window, but a good idea just to stop some fluff. Thanks

I'd be direct with my boss and see if a compromise can be made for a 9 am EST start. If there is something urgent that cannot wait, then so be it. Be honest. They have an hour before you to get their kiddos/lives in order too.

I am on the west coat and work entirely east coast accounts so I feel you. Best word of advice is to just communicate and make sure that everyone knows that you have your own routine in the morning that can't be ignored. Also the suggestion about blocking off that time on your calendar each day is a good idea. I work with reps that have blocks on their calendar to pick up their kids from practice, drop them off at school, etc

It is paramount not only to set the blocks but to keep them. Thanks for the input and feel you for sure!

I was given west coast territory even though I live on the east coast and it has been a godsend!

I think, especially in this new world we're in, that standard time expectations are past their prime. We're all now acclimated to a much more blended personal/professional life that includes midday walks/exercise sessions, laundry, dishes, etc. And that absolutely includes child care. Take care of yourself and set clear boundaries.

I’m in mountain, but also cover central. Company is ET where legal, ops, marketing etc sit so timing is a struggle sometimes, less for meetings and more for ops; getting turns with legal in the afternoon, approvals on quotes, etc. I try to do as much planning ahead as possible...but sometimes things have to push to the next day, or week if it’s on a Friday...which is annoying.

In terms of meetings, my team is western and my manager schedules appropriately. I also establish “rule” with my BDR and SA, no calls before 8am.

Its a good rule, i can sense the issues in summer especially trying to move the needle at end of day. Good practice, thanks for response

If you work in sales, 9:00 to 5:00 or 8:00 to 5:00, doesn't exist. You might as well accept that or find a new profession. I might sit around on my ass and not do a damn thing for 3 weeks, but when I need to close a deal and it's multimillion dollar contract, I work 80-hour plus weeks on weekends holidays, airplanes and time zones. That shit doesn't matter. That's the beauty of sales. Get them to sign on the line which is dotted.

I mean everything above. However, as a father of three little kids myself, I totally get the kids in the morning thing. Just block it off on your calendar. And if your company and bosses have a problem with that, you work for the wrong company. But literally, just sell some shit and you can do whatever you want.

Work your pipeline. If you can’t tell time then wtf.
I call kind of every prospect from construction to marketing slouches and everything in between. Construction, merits a 6am call or late pm call. The rest is 7-5 their time. Ultimately, it’s always a good time for them to make $$$$.

I would love to work a 6-2 or 7-3 but sadly my company is strict with the 8:30-5 time line. Even when done with our work for the day you must stay until 5pm otherwise it is frowned upon.
