Tipping waiters/bartenders

Saw a linkedin post about tipping your servers and it got me wondering about us as salespeople.

Do ya'll tip your servers?

Should the tip system be undone and just start paying servers a higher wage?

What if the service sucked? Do you still tip? What percent?

What do you consider generally acceptable for an average tip with average service?

Personally, I default to the 20% for average to good service and more for great service. I can't think of many situations where the service was what I would consider bad but I've only ever not tipped once and that was because the waiter not only sucked at his job but was rude enough to my wife that I told him he better have someone else bring the check because it wouldn't be good for him if our paths crossed again.

Do you tip servers when you go out?

As a former bartender and beer cart bitch I am putting it on record always tip the folks serving your needs.

As a former barback, yes please tip even for mediocre service. We used to live off a cut of that and did all the shit work.

We tip wrong in the modern age.

TIP stands for "To Insure Promptitude"

Tip beforehand and see the magic happen.

In California, servers get minimum wage. But they get taxed on 8% of sales because the feds assume they’re also getting tipped. So tip them so they didn’t just pay for the privilege of waiting on you.

Gotta tip. Even if they were a bad server. Just tip less. But they get hardly a few dollars per hour.
Especially for us in sales, we should have the means to tip. If/when I choose to eat out it is something that is part of the experience (at least in america)

I live in a country where waiters have to be paid minimum wage or more (The fancier the restaurant, the better the pay), so tipping isn't really enforced. So If you give me good service, I'll leave a tip. If I receive exceptional service, I'll tip more.

The US has to up its game with the treatment of waiters. HOW THE FUCK IS IT ALLOWED TO PAY WAITERS 2 TO 4 DOLLARS AN HOUR?????? WTF

From a former bartender and hospitality worker for 7 years please please always tip your bartenders and waitresses. They get paid next to nothing on the books and basically rely on tips to survive

i somehow made it through life to this point without being a server. BUT i feel like the whole "tipping" form of compensation is insane and should be done away with.

i just dont understand why we let restaurants not pay employees at least minimum wage???

My friends that are servers will say that they dont always pay taxes on all the income which is good (i guess?) and that cash is awesome.

But its just not necessary.

I know that is restaurants had to do this they may go out of business because costs would skyrocket and their margins are already thin but idk man its a really sucky model.

Always tip, but also, I just learned something last night from a friend who owns a bar. A lot of the time bartenders will severely discount your tab if you're a regular and you should tip on what you expected to pay, not what you were charged. I naively thought the alcohol at one bar was just super cheap, but it turns out I was getting free drinks every time without my knowledge.

99.9999% of the time.

But I've had a few examples of service so egregious I couldn't deal. It has to go so far beyond poor service and become willful though.

I used to tip housekeeping in hotels pre-Covid but now they don’t clean your room on a multi day stay so I stopped.

I always tip. Every single time. But, it's stupid as fuck. Why are we responsible for servers wages? No where in Europe do they tip. These fucking restaurants are charging $7 for a beer that cost them a dollar. I'm currently doing an experiment where I don't tip at all. It's been about a week. Doing it for the month of July.

20% no matter what.

Good, bad, whatever it’s 20% and if I can’t afford 20% every time I shouldn’t be there.

20% minimum tip always. I also think they should be paid fair wages. I am not in favor of getting rid of tips just like I'm not in favor of getting rid of sales commission
