Tips for taking a promotion out of the country

I was promoted and took a job in Madrid (moving from the US), curious for any tips when moving abroad with a sales job.

Hey mate! Iโ€™m brazilian, and would recommend you for the exchange rate. If you come, make sure to be vaccinated. Dollar is currently in a low phase, but still good. Another option is Buenos Aires. Everyday the dollar ranks higher over there! Good luck!

Don't follow Barca football club. I don't like them personally lol.

But in all seriousness, I think it would be a great experience in a great country. Just learn their culture a bit before you go so that you dont unintentionally offend them in any way

Try to find some "ex-pat" groups to hang out with when you get there. It's great to have local friends, but you'll find those are harder to come by and other "ex-pats" (people non-native to Spain like you) will be much much eager to hang out and give you something to do outside of work hours

Anecdotally it may be difficult to move & get a visa with Covid. I have a colleague who was supposed to relocate to Australia for an internal promotion and between bureaucracy and Covid it's been nearly 2 years and they're still in the US.

But as others said: Learn Spanish. Also, find and befriend Spaniards, don't be tempted to just to hang out with other American ex-pats.ย

Visa is already approved, took about 5 months.

Understand the culture.ย

Know your social queues. Some cultures are very nom-american...ย

Example: In America, when someone says 'thank you' in passing/transaction the usual response is a "uh-huh"

As a Canadian, this upset me when I started travelling south, thinking I did something rude, but it's the norm in America to acknowledge the thanks with a uh-huh, sure, or something other than you're welcome. So weird.

I am sure Spain has these. Know them early. Understand them.
