On a more practical/tactical level, don't be afraid to say "I don't know" if you're stumped or in over your head. However, use a little sales judo and ask them to re-word the question first, or ask the haymaker "why is that important?"
No matter the industry...if you are in sales:
ASK GREAT QUESTIONS:
- when we want client to elaborate more-"Can you tell me more about that?"
- when we want them to be more specific - "Can you provide me with an example?"
- when they stress urgency - "How long has that been a problem?"
- attempted before - "What have you tried to do about this in the past?"
- the direction after - "Has anything worked?"
- how painful was it - "How much has this problem cost you?"
- when personally invested - "How do you feel about that?"
I still am working at getting better at defaulting to these.
All answers, even the great ones, are always context dependent. Questions are versatile. They can guide you even if the situation changes.
