Took the bait and I was right. Update.

https://bravado.co/war-room/posts/i-took-the-bait-and-beginning-to-regret-it

link above is my original post about my skepticism of this Series A start-up I joined in September.

Company meeting today laying off the entire sales team. 25 people including most leadership roles (managers and directors), roughly 30% of org.

$20 million raised and funded just 2 quarters ago and. majority of our team was hired within last 3-5 months.

Pretty taken aback. Lot of tears from those who didn't see the writing on the wall.

Rather be spiteful and say "why is this happening to me..." I'm keeping the perspective of "what can I learn from this..."

Lot of dirty laundry aired as the staff being let go joined one final zoom meeting together to vent.

Very wild stuff and hard to process.

My hope is that the founders and remaining leadership team retained learn from their mistakes. 10 other colleagues let go just 6 weeks ago. We were assured we had plenty of time to get ramped up and hit quota.

It was hard to hear colleagues and friends ask the hard questions..."where did all the funding go? what happened to the 15 months of runway? Right before the holidays?"

Interesting experience for sure.

My advice to those job searching and desiring to join a startup in the early stages...

1) please utilize the resources within Bravado academy. Ton of great insights and recommendations to help you vet these companies. Ask as many questions as possible. Ask to see finances. If they are hesitant, instant red flag.

2) Trust your gut.

That truly sucks, but love your outlook on a shitty situation. No doubt you'll land on your feet (and in a much better spot) because of your positive attitude. Good luck!

Damn, so unfortunate. I hope all that have been affected will be able to bounce back to something new.

Way to keep the proper mindset on the matter. You have us and we have your back.

No clue 🦊. Just extremely strange that the people laid off today were told just 4 weeks ago we were solid for next 6+ months to drive sales.

Our supply chain and marketing team all let go too from what we’re hearing.

Just odd. And spineless imo that the ceo didn’t do it himself.

damn....this is just BRUTAL! right before the holidays....

I would be asking all the same questions if the company just got all that money.

what are their plans if they have NO sales team??

Thanks @TennisandSales - the only people retained were the close close friends of the founder.

I’d guess they’re going to handle it all? No clue.

Really sorry this happened. Hopefully the 30% raise helps offset the time away searching for your next role.

Do you like your previous role enough to email them back?

I'm sorry to hear. My company is likely going to do a second round of layoffs after the first a few months ago.

Despite closing deals and doing well, I know safety is never a guarantee.

That sounds like a nightmare in a teacup. Glad to hear you are able to take it on the chin.

I’m sure something worthwhile will show up for you in Jan. I’d take some time to decompress and enjoy the holidays. Best of luck friend!

That sucks. Especially as the holidays are rolling in. Series A is always big risk/reward scenario.

You can ask to see finances, but they aren't going to show some lowly sales person their balance sheet unfortunately.

I'm sorry to hear this, hope you land on your feet soon.

I never got companies laying off all salespeople. How the hell can they survive if no one is driving rev?

Let's not pretend the CEO or VP is going to beat the pavement and have any real success while also bailing out the sinking ship.

I feel for everyone involved. It's a really difficult time in tech as well as the broader economy overall.

So sorry to hear this, and really wish you land on your feet quickly! If you're in the US, take this coming holiday week or two to breathe, and dive right back in. It sounds like you have a lot to offer other companies!

It's an interesting time for sure, and an influx of cash does not mean companies are stable. My company that got $500M about a year ago still laid off 10%+ of the company, even while profitable. Cash infusion is one thing, but run-rate, OpEx, equity and such all play a role. Right now, I'm hearing from multiple PE-backed companies that the boards are all asking them to lock down or trim spending, even if they have lots of cash in the bank. Not saying I agree with this, but point being that investment is unfortunately not a sure indicator.

Best of luck to you!

Good luck and stay positive. Hopefully you can turn these lemons into lemonade and it will all have been worth it.

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.
