Top AE - Interviewing for Sales Manager Role. Any tips?

Hey, whats up everyone!

I've been AEing for 10 years, sucked at it at first but improved along the way. I'm the top AE at my workplace for 6 Qs in a row. The company is growing fast and I applied internally for a regional sales manager.

I will be up against external candidates who have a ton more experience leading teams and kicking ass.

Any tips for me to nail the interview?

Have a deep understanding of the higher level strategy and plan. How are you going to help execute that? Be prepared to explain how youโ€™ll navigate the dynamic of being a AE and colleague to potentially being someoneโ€™s boss. Youโ€™re in a unique position, knowing the full sales cycle, the pains and challenges the team faces, you already have the respect and gravitas amongst the team...that goes a long way. Who do you want to be as a leader within the org? Be prepared to talk about leaders that you look up to, what do you admire about them.ย

Show that youโ€™re willing to learn.ย

acknowledge your lack of the roles experience but be ready to rationalize what you offer in regards to the companyโ€™s needs for a sales managerย

Experience is one thing, but understanding how to apply that experience in accordance with what the company is looking for is another thing.

understanding what theyโ€™re truly looking for and tailoring your interview talk tracks to that will separate you. Also, for leadership itโ€™s important to demonstrate that youโ€™re a cultural fit.

Reach out to other leaders in the company to understand the role and the transition from rep to manager. ย Schedule a 1 on 1 with the sale VP/CRO that is more informal figure out what they need in a sales leader and try to apply what you've learned to the interview process.

Well, as you advance in the organization, I would recommend looking into it... used properly - AND THAT IS THE KEY - it can make understanding and managing people much easier.ย  Even a sales pro, a basic understanding can pay huge dividends.
