I've been on a course before where we 'had to practice cold calling' and one girl said after a call 'I'd push my colleagues under a bus just to get a meeting'. Jesssssus.

the toxicity is ~shocking~ to say the very least. glad i am not the only one who has experienced this, but c'mon there's gotta be leaders out there that don't tolerate this amongst their teams...right?!ย

There is, for the lucky ones! I've said previously on this forum that I'd like to imagine if I was the Director of sales (etc) I'd get rid of this culture. However, it's a silver lining, if it happens more and more, move on and you'll eventually land in a role where it's a holistically pleasant culture and you'll love it.ย

I've been at my company 2+ years and I'm moving in to a pad with one of them, I got lucky, but try and find yourself that luck matey.ย

that's encouraging to hear. I'd like to think I would be the same if I were given that level of leadership...

Good to know there are some good ones out there!

do you have any recommendations on how to actively not engage? for example, if a coworker comes up to you and vents to you about someone on their team, do you have any good responses to diffuse the convo?

I would make it clear to them you don't want to be a part of that conversation. "hey, I don't mind if you want to vent but I'd rather not be a part of any gossip"

If they keep coming back to you, just be stern about it. Unfortunately people are assholes and might ostracize you but this where focusing on your work comes into play. Just kick ass, hit your numbers and exceed managements expectations and whatever your peers think of you won't mean a thing when you're consistently showing results.ย

like, throwing coworkers under the bus every chance they get, very two-faced when it comes to being "work besties" but then turning and saying "I hope she ends up getting fired soon"

My first advice would be to leave. I am fresh out of college too and was in a toxic company, I left after 2 months. Honestly would have left after a month but I was waiting for another opportunity to come along. So many companies are looking for SDR/BDR right now that they don't care if you leave after a few months.ย

If you don't want to leave. DO NOT AND DO NOT engage in the drama. At my previous company, this girl that I thought was "my friend" came to me and I engaged in her drama, next thing you know, homegirl throws me under the boss during a team meeting... I owned up to what I said because that's just how I am and I didn't give a fuck anymore but you know, I would have preferred to be lowkey.

ah, thank you for this! i called a few friends this morning and they reminded me, "you are not the exception - if they are talking shit about others, they are talking shit about you"...so now I'm making extra sure to not give anyone ammo against me lol. i think i am going to begin updating my resumรฉ...ย

stoked you have been able to leave and start somewhere else!

Yeah thatโ€™s good that you are being cautious, cause maaan you cannot trust anyone in those environments. The nicest people are the most dangerous!

Keep focus on your goals and what you control. Don't engage in the conversations that seem negative. Eventually if you don't seem interested in their drama people stop bringing it to you.

In my experience, toxic environments are there because of a lack of leadership. And if you see that early, it's best to strategically put yourself halfway out the door.ย

Ugh I totally feel you on this.ย

Get your work done. When someone starts up....pretend to get a phone call, make an excuse to leave the room....

never, ever speak negatively about anyone. you can always find something to compliment, like "they sure do put in a lot of effort!", "I love their sense of style", "always punctual" - whatever. Just cut off negative comments before they start.ย

And dont ever, ever assume anyone is your friend. save your friendships for after work hours.ย

Toxic work culture will change you and you might not even know it.ย  I agree with what Opal said but sometimes you can be a target if you aren't participating.ย  If you find that to be the case, listen to everyone, don't contribute to the conversation and simply validate what they are telling you in a general way.ย  That usually gets them off your back.ย ย

Oh man. That is rough. I actually had this same situation happen to myself. I left after 8 months. I'd recommend staying as long as you can but one thing to do is have your LinkedIn set to "open to work" so recruiters reach out to you. Once they reach out to you it is a lot easier to say in the interview process that you are just keeping your options open. Good luck my friend. I feel for you

The work environment is always a problem, but over time learn to recognize people who are worthwhile and those who are not, keep your friends close and your enemies watched, also look for hobbies or things that take your mind off work

Hey I worked a lot of food industry jobs.

The worst one by far my manager was known in other departments for being a boor. She was lazy AF and on top of that management sucked.

Always remember you work for the job you want, not the job you're at.
