Transactional Sales vs. Consultative Sales

We’ve all held different roles in different verticals. Some of which are quick turn and burn roles, others are long and involved. In my early days I preferred the transactional rapid fire nature but the longer I’m in sales the more I prefer to build relationships and aim for larger deals that require a more consultative approach.

Which do you prefer and why?

Much prefer consultative. I got hired into a transactional role after it was falsely described to me as a consultative role and i was bored out of my mind and left in pretty short order.

I agree, it’s a much better approach and adds value. It’s sales you’re selling a product but the person really is buying you

whats the argument here? One is sport, one is a joke. I love sports and I love jokes. Room for all!

Transactional is more difficult. The sale itself may be easier, but the repetitiveness, high pressure, and lack of flexibility within the sales process makes it really wear on reps' psyche after a while. I used to hear reps say that if they didn't take Adderall they wouldn't be able to do the job, and I think that's sad.

Transactional is easier to pick up/ramp, but burnout would be high. All I can add is that there is a reason why some transactional sales gigs try to phrase them as "consultants" but I've never seen a true consultative sale try to position themselves as transactional. I might be overlooking something though.

I think burn out happens faster with transactional.

APAC = (1) you have to know someone, (2) you have to pay a fee for access, (3) they don't buy the hype, (4) easy come, easy go is counter-culture to them.

That's as easy as I could distill it while trying to cover a bunch of non-American problems you'll need to overcome.
