Transgender in sales.

So I know this may be a sensitive subject for many but I am curious to hear experiences.

has anyone worked with someone, who is transgendered where they identified as one gender, and then identified as another while at the same company?

I have seen a few linked in posts about people in sales that are trans, and was interested to hear if others have experienced this?

I am curious to hear how trans people have been received in their workplace by co workers and even prospects.

For trans sales people I feel like it may be even more difficult.

also for clarity, i totally support trans people and their ability to chose how they identify.

Never met anyone trans in a professional environment, but I think/hope it wouldn't be a problem - aside from certain industries with really old school assholes.

I used to work with someone who started publicly identifying as Non-binary. Nice person. They left a few months after so hard to tell if it affected their performance. My guess is they wanted a fresh start which feels like the right move.

I would have a hard time with anyone who in a professional work place suddenly decided they wanted to change their personal pronouns and then expected everyone to comply.

As a saleperson - I don't care what anyone chooses to do w/their life as long as it doesn't affect my paycheck. End of story.

Side note - I don't get the plural pronouns. Its a grammar issue, it bothers me.

I don't know anyone currently but wouldn't be surprised if in the next 5 years I know multiple.

Due to WFH, it allows people that are transgender be able to control their environment a lot more and avoid people that are intolerant towards them. Especially compared to 2019, where you can be meeting people in person and you might not know how they will react when they first see you.

I have yet to meet someone personally (that I know of). I have been seeing an increase in LI posts about it though.

My thing with it has always been, I support your right to do/be whoever you want to be. Freedom is what this country was founded on. But also don't get mad at me when I inevitably fuck it up and call you the wrong thing. Because I'm not doing it to be a dick, I'm just legitimately dumb and will forget.

I hired a trans man last year and I didnโ€™t know until he told me. I havenโ€™t worked with anyone in transition yet but I imagine there are more โ€œpassingโ€ folks out there than you realize.

Takes a lot of guts to post this so I'm gonna comment. I have not but I'm sure there is someone someplace at my company. I have to imagine unless you are selling in certain markets, it might be more challenging. I also feel this is a newer trend with Gen Zers so it will happen more and more. Wiki says Gen Z are between 9 and 24years old.

idk if I would call it a trend, but the idea that trans people actually exist is for sure becoming more widely accepted.

I sell heavy equipment so my clientele is much older. Itโ€™s extremely uncommon but I would imagine a trans person would have a difficult time in the construction industry.

There is a ton of young blood coming into the industry and in the offices and top ranks itโ€™s more modern and understanding than youโ€™d think. But I think getting your foot into offices would be tough.

I'm actually mid transition myself and very curious if anyone knows anyone in this thread. So far I've only met a handful of others who have done it. It'd be great to get connected!

Sales is about making a customer like you. You change who you are a little for that closing. You also have to make people like you. If you arenโ€™t willing to do that, sales isnโ€™t for you.

hmm idk if I would agree.

I think sales is about showing ppl you understand their problems, and can solve their problems. not really about making them like you. NOW of course you cant be a dick to people. But i dont actively try to make ppl like me. I try to be engaging, informative, and helpful.

I also dont know if I "change who I am" but I do mirror the person Im talking to. but i dont think that is me changing who I am. that kinda sounds exhausting

Haven't worked with anyone Trans, that I know about. I suppose its a lot of "it depends" out there.

The few people I know outside of work who "identify" as an opposite gender generally have a lot of other baggage in their lives. Those generally translate to significant work issues which would make being a sales professional more difficult than for another person.

But at the end of the day, I am a results-driven person and if they generate the same professional results I'd expect from everyone else, then why should I care about anything else?

We had a beloved woman turn into a man. She already presented as a man so the physical wasn't very jarring for us. The problem we had was calling him 'he/him' when we had known him for so long as a she. After his top surgery he pulled the entire crew into a meeting and straight up said "look I'm not expecting everyone to get it right, I get it. I just want some effort when I'm being talked about" and pretty much everyone, conservative and liberal, took it in stride. That was a year ago and he has no problems with getting called the right pronouns. Happy for him.
