Transition from Fully cycle sales to SDR

Till now, I've been responsible for full sales cycle : from prospecting till closing (4-6 weeks).
Now I'm interviewing for a SDR Manager role. And I'm not sure whether I'm a great fit.
My questions now:

1) Would you make the switch? Or better focus on AE?
2) Which advantages/disadvantages given my previous experience?
3) What are the main differences full cycle vs only SDR?

I've never heard of a SDR job that closes. ๐Ÿค”

Your compensation potential in the SDR leadership function, unless you run global SDR teams with several managers reporting to you, will be severely limited in growth compared to your potential as an AE. Iโ€™ve also seen very few SDR managers graduate into AE management roles. Different skill sets and animals that donโ€™t often translate well.

So you would recommend staying in (short) full sales cycles rather than SDR management, wouldnโ€™t you?

Yes. If you want to get into management, be an SMB AE manager to start.

Why do YOU want to make the switch?ย  That's the real question.ย  What's in it for you and your career?ย ย

Personally, I would only go that route if I was wanting to wet my feet in a mngt role.

Itโ€™s what you said (mngt role) + the company is well founded and with higher potential

Management is obviously a good choice to get on that path.ย  ย Do you know what the next step is?ย  ย Managing a sales team, or do they push you over through marketing?

No I donโ€™t. If I were to choose, Iโ€™d pick the sales team

are you in Saas / an industry that has an SDR and AE model?ย

I transitioned from a full cycle sales role to SDR when I left financial services to get into Saas.

1. PERSONALLY i would not. but you need to understand if you want to be in management or not
2. if you havnt been an SDR before you may not fully understand the role or your team my not belive you understand their role.

Telling an SDR that you know how to close deals is like telling a basketball player you are good at kicking field goals.....it doesnt matter.ย

3. the differences are clear. 1 you do everything the other, you only set the first meeting. its a MASSIVE difference.ย

Iโ€™m in the adtech industry without SDR+AE model.

1. I want to be in management role
2. How can I overcome that?
3. Do you think itโ€™s more an advantage(going from doing everything to one thing) or not? And why?

Extra question: are you happy with the change you made ?

I did this to get into Saas as well, its a good step to really learn how it works before taking on next steps. The foundation is crucial

Doing that preliminary research on the industry is huge showing that you have interest and truly are looking to get there. In a sense making it seem your treating your current role as a stepping stone to get where you want
