Transitioning from SDR -> CSM

Has anyone successfully been able to transition from an SDR to a CSM role?

Just finished 6 months as an SDR and have realized that I can not do the SDR job long term. I do have a technical background, so looking if there are folks who have been in similar shoes.

Patience is a wonderful thing, but you also need to map out a plan with your current manager. Dont jump to early, learn as much as you can. Ask AE's if you can sit in on some demos or meetings. Change things up...

Career mapping helps and planning works best - once this is done, execute by seeing if the traits you have for CSM are evident in SDR role ; key traits to look for : reconciliation management, issue resolution TAT (depends on business to business!)

Yes - Not personally but had a friend who did. It's all about focusing on the process. CSM needs to look longterm and be relationship heavy.

@sandalwood🙋🏼‍♀️ i have. usually people start getting tired of the sdr job because of metrics/fatigue/rejection/etc. and it is *super* hard but also has a ton of transferrable skills to the csm role so try not to jump too quickly.

sales + cs are extremely similar but a few things that helped me:

1. network w. csms. start adding, connecting, and meeting with people on twitter or LI
2. listen to 'gain, grow, retain' to start listening to common problems/terminology in the cs world
3. map out a transition to cs with your current manager OR start looking for companies that will allow you to come in entry-level or with your selling experience and that understand there's a ton of skill overlap between both
4. join communities like thursday night sales, or any cs-focused ones like catalyst's
