Trusting a RocketShip?

Just noticed a LI post from someone who works at Better (Linkedin's #1 Top Startups of 2021).

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/linkedin-top-startups-2021-50-us-companies-rise-linkedin-news/

Apparently they just had a large layoff today.

This gets me thinking; If the #1 startup on the list still does mass firings, how can you trust your next jump?

Might just be the unavoidable blip where they had to cut and I'm completely wrong and they are still great.

***Also you might point out to me that the Linkedin list is Pay to Play and fake as fuck*** I wouldn't doubt it.

Best of luck to anyone who works/worked there.

All those lists are pay to play. I used to work for the "best place to work" in the world. We had the person who put the list together join and all hands and basically tell us the CEO and head of HR gave them a pile of money so they could mess with the metrics and make sure they're #1.

Not sure if that's hilarious or sad..I'm going to go with both.

the company contributed a lot to charity, and was generous in matching employees contributions. They weren't evil, just misguided.

I worked for one of the greatest companies to work for ...which was very true, unless you were in sales.  Where it SUCKED.  It made me sad, to be honest.

Feel that, Sunbun. Sucks to recognize when you’re in a bad org in a good company.

Yeah.   I was very proud to be with that company, but my career sucked.  I got out.

Admittedly I don't know much about them, but looking at their headcounts versus the rest of that list, its quite clear why they had massive layoffs.

You can pay a lot of money to be #1 on a list and still shit the bed. That's my takeaway.

LOL I personally know several employees at Better - company is an over bloated over funded loan company calling itself fintech. Chopped the bottom 20% of the sales force and guarantee they see a productivity boost. Worser.com

Absolutely do not trust any of those lists. One of the worst companies I've ever worked for is always top of those lists. They are all trash

FWIW mortgage (Better’s industry) is a super volatile industry. Very boom or bust depending on the year and macro-economic factors way outside of any company’s control.

Having just recently switched companies, it’s really hard to determine if a company is worthy of their awards/reviews these days. My advice is reach out to people, who seemed to have been successful and left and ask why.

Got a mortgage thru them and the process was horrid. If they invested in good talent it’d be a different story but most of their employees are brand new to RE and don’t know shit

of rocketships at some point fuck up and lay people off, and not just because of covid.

sometimes it's before/after raising money.
maybe they need to get their books in order.

in this case it sounds like softbank gave them loads of cash in exchange for some 'streamlining'

Eh, can't really feel secure anywhere unfortunately. My game is to grow my savings so I don't actually *need* a job. (I get that this is a privileged position to be in, but guessing my fellow sales champs are making enough money to do this too.) But basically, that way if I do get laid off, it sucks, but it's not the end.

As a sales professional, did you think through and design your career path, or were you thrown in and now you're just winging it?
