Two Options - Manage or IC

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for some advice to help me decide which direction to go here.

I'm a Sales Manager within a IT Pro services business unit of a holding company with sister companies providing similar IT Services.

One of the business leaders at the sister company below wants me to join his team as an IC.

I have about 9 years of Account Management / Account Executive and Sales Management experience in IT Infra and Cloud. Yes.... I'm money motivated.

Current:

My current team is the smallest and like the black sheep of the holdings group. We sell to SMB/Midmarket. I have a team reporting to me of 1 AM and 1 AE. This year was supposed to have total of 5 reporting underneath me but the VP of Operations, has 0 sales experience and decided to slow the hiring of sales people. Our delivery team struggles with customer retention, I've lost 4 customers in the past 9 months based on service delivery. I think there is possibility I could present a plan to get the 5+ employees as a team underneath me starting 2022.

ACV - $10k-$100k

Cycle - 6 weeks

Potential:

The sister company is the hotshot of the holding company. I would say positioning itself very nicely to be sold (100m revenue mark). They focus on enterprise and large deal sizes that require pursuit teams. The leadership here definitely understands and supports sales however have created too much red tape to even get a proposal out the door. I would be an individual contributor here working larger deal sizes.

State and Local Gov

ACV $1m - 20m

Cycle - 6 months

I think it really comes down to compensation and what blows your hair back. I HATE long sale cycle products, always have so I personally would steer away from the second gig, but thatโ€™s just me. Your equation is what type of selling do I prefer + compensation difference = decision

This is good advice, for me it comes down to spending 6+ months on a deal. If thatโ€™s what you like, do it.ย

SMB vs. State and Gov are two very different sales cycles (building on top of @LordBusinessย comment).ย
