Uniforms in an accounting office

A market that is growing a lot here where I live (Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil) is the use of uniforms in work environments. I was recently asked about the wearing of uniforms at an accounting firm I serve. I was given the mission to decide whether or not employees should wear uniforms. I asked some, some were against, but most were in favor. What is your opinion about the use of uniforms? Do you agree?

Are you for or against uniforms?

Why is this even a discussion? We are all adults. Have a dress code, but not uniforms. What the hell.

I don't know.  The idea of getting out of bed and wearing another blue jumpsuit might have it's advantages.  Less decisions to make...

I haven't had to wear a suit and tie since I was 18. I'm fine with continuing to not wear one.

Meeting with clients there should be a minimum level expected, but if the sales rep misses the bar on this one I doubt their competency in other areas as well.

This also heavily depends on the segment - you turn up to work with creatives wearing suits good luck.

What is the definition of this "uniform"? Are we all wearing the same grey polo and black pants with black shoes...or do we have to adhere to a dress code where all employees must meet a certain standard?

In this case it would be a gray dress shirt, black dress pants and a black tie (or no tie, not yet decided).

Let people have some individuality, but set a dress-code they need to adhere to. Feels too culty otherwise.

I dont hate everyone having to dress to a certain level but im not trying to go to catholic school wearing the exact same thing as everyone else in the office.

Are we talking about suits or everyone wearing matching stuff. Because if it's old school IBM-type everyone's matching, that is gross.

We haven't worn a uniform for 8 years and we feel great. We don't hear complaints, the boss praises the good looks. If they look good, I don't see the need to wear a uniform.

If any company were to hit me with anything past a business casual dress code, I'm rescinding my application. No thank you please, I'm an adult who can pick out her own clothes AND tie her own shoes.

I feel like as an American I have a different take on this than someone in Brazil. If I was asked to wear a uniform (Matching everyone in an office setting) then I would think that is weird.
Having a dress code is different, that's "normal". Also having uniforms at restaurants or service companies is "normal".

But in an office where customers don't come in? Nah that's a no for me.

It's a good argument. Actually, not all customers come in, but there is still movement of customers, especially when paying taxes.

Thats a big NO on uniforms for me. Collared shirt and pants w/ a belt is about all you're gonna get out of me lol. I'm done with Suits and Hard-soled shoes everyday.

For me, wearing a nice, neat, well-regarded uniform is excellent. It's always good for the customer to see everyone well organized and beautiful.

Professional dress should be somewhat universal, but uniforms seem unnecessary to me. So long as you maintain a professional standard, a uniform seems at best redundant, at worst restrictive.

How do you ask "for or against" and then include "yes or no" in the poll?  Am I the only one confused by this?

Have standards but an overall matching outfit? That's just odd.

I can see some folks liking uniforms as it removes the daily task of figuring out what to wear if in office everyday. I personally don’t care one way or the other.

I have never herd of any company doing uniforms before. I understand those that have stricter guidelines of what you can and can not wear meaning business professional clothing but not a uniform that everyone has the same one. This makes me think of private schools and not professional offices.

Can you ask your colleagues to vote on it?  Sounds like you did a bit of a poll, but maybe a confidential vote, including what you think the options for the uniform might be, would be the best path.

I mean, I spent 11 years in Catholic school, so I'm certainly familiar with uniforms.  I've also had to dress to staff booths at conferences as well, but I haven't had to wear a uniform for work in an office, well, ever, so I have a pretty firm idea that uniforms are a no - but that's also my California, USA, opinion, and I might be far off on what's appropriate in another country.
