Unpopular Opinion

My unpopular opinion is that sending a LinkedIn request to a prospect is too much. Tell me why Iโ€™m wrong.

Why do you feel it's wrong? LinkedIn is for professional networking...ย

Just curious how else you go about it. Do you just send a message without a request?

Why would a request be considered too much? You don't have many SN credits and an accepted request allows a free message. you can easily send out 2-5x the amount of messages each month if you play this right. It's been a lifeline of mine for years now. So in my humble opinion that doesn't mean much, it is not too much and can lead to a huge amount of business if utilized properly, which includes requests.

I don't think it's too much. I would try to have a conversation with them first (and then send the request). They may be sending requests themselves to connect with future business partners in their industry or segment.

I liked sending requests after a quality conversation to say something like:

"Hey, _____ thanks for chatting today. Looking forward to our next conversation."

I think this gives them a bit more of a personal touch than just an email or waiting for the next call.ย

What I'm against is cold outreach via link that involves a pitch and a question. I get these all the time being in a sales training role, and I can tell you that I never answer them. If I do respond, I'll say, "My numbers on my profile, you can give me a call."

Cold pitches don't stand out for me because they've become so frequent these days and they are all formulaic and sound insincere to me.

Here's a recent example (what they do and names redacted):

"I thought I would say hello (Hi!) and introduce myself... My company helps in ___________ .ย ย  Let's schedule a quick 10-minute call."

This assumes that I have a problem that needs to be solved and doesn't really take much of an approach to understand myself as a prospect (or if I'm even qualified).

Iโ€™m interested in why you think itโ€™s too much. I respect you know your opinion doesnโ€™t fit the masses ๐Ÿ˜…

Tell us why is too much first.ย
Sending a FB or IG request is too much, sending a professional network request on a professional network platform is the way I think

I send requests sometimes and I always include a note. I think that helps make it less weird if that's what your worried about

I understand that having a convo first is better. But for me itยดs like a friendly reach-out. If they do not want to be connected fine, but then answer my calls/mails.
