***UPDATE*** RE: Sexual Harassment - To Tell or not to Tell

***UPDATE*** He was terminated, which is not something to joke about. He admitted fault and is seeking treatment for sexual addiction. The female co-worker is on a paid leave of absence to seek mental health treatment paid for by the company.

Thanks for all the thoughtful advice. It didn't go on deaf ears.

I know I usually am on here to laugh and joke around, but I have a serious question today.

My boss sexually harassed a co-worker at an out-of-state work conference. The female co-worker confided in me. She wouldn't give me the details, but she called me crying that night and was crying at the next day's conference. I told her to go to HR and report him when she called me that night. She even flew home early. Again, I reiterated that she should go to HR. She said that she didn't want to and wanted to let it drop. Again, I said, you seem pretty upset by what happened, and I think you should go to HR.

The question is, do I report him? The female colleague doesn't work for either of us. I want to respect her wishes and not report him. My concerns are, one, I don't want to work with a sex pest, two, I don't want this to happen to anyone else, and three, I don't want to seem complicit in this. The female has asked me not to say anything. Our company doesn't have any policies on reporting sexual harassment. I also don't want to seem self-serving because I am probably next in line for his job.

What would you do?

***UPDATE*** The victim reported him on her own after some encouragement from her boss and the CSO.

Glad that worked out. I hope she recovers and I hope his help provides safeguards so he does not do this again. I also hope she still reports him and he suffers the consequences of his actions in a legal sense as well.

Wow, it's so rare to hear about a company who does the right thing- kudos to them! I'm glad this person is seeking treatment, and can't victimize anyone else at your company.

IMO there are no winners here.  This is just a shitty situation.  He will wear this Albatross around his neck for the rest of his life.  It will do little to repair the joy he took from the female.

That didn't sound right on my end, I just meant to congratulate you on doing the right thing and help the issue be addressed. It had to be brutal for your co-worker.

And I am probably super sensitive to it because I have been going througb a bunch of things for this and I can’t talk to anyone about it.

I'm sorry to hear @DataSlangah  that. Sexual Harassment and SA takes a toll on everyone it touches physically and mentally, unfortunately it's never enough of a toll on the perpetrator. If it's still bothering you this much, I'd say it might be worth looking into some therapy or counseling sessions. You'd be surprised at how helpful it can be to just get that stuff off your chest with someone who you can trust won't say anything to someone else.
