Upward Mobility: To Stay or To Go?

In my experience, it's been quite evident that people who move outside of my organization often leverage their title and the strong brand behind our business into jobs that pay significantly better or - at the very least - more competitively with the industry, as most of us have worked our way up the ladder from entry level to closing roles.

Are you more likely to stick it out for a strong brand reputation on your resume, leaving money on the table? Or are you taking that brand name and going shopping for a new role at a smaller business?

**EDIT**

If you're using the brand as a resume booster, how long are you staying before you start exploring more lucrative options?

I think brand for a period of time but you have to leverage it at some point to get paid

This is a good point. It allows you to negotiate from a position of power rather than attempting to "argue your case" to a recruiter internally who already knows your compensation specifics.

I think this is not an *if* conversation but when.ย  There's value in the rising the ranks and loyalty aspects but that's not a forever game. If the company truly values the employees they'll make every effort to keep them.ย

I know there's outside research on this but even anecdotally, everyone who comes to my org is getting great money- and everyone who leaves my org goes for great money.ย

Staying gets me .... uhh, bragging rights for being underpaid?ย

Somethings gotta give, go where you're paid- WELL.ย

Agreed - if you aren't moving me up, I'm walking somewhere I can move up. Company loyalty is a thing of the past. If you don't invest in me, I'm not investing in you.

Very true. At some point you have to get the bag for doing the work you're qualified (or perhaps in some cases even over-qualified) to do.
