Using marijuana to sleep ๐ŸŒณ ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿ’จ

Just read this (long, but awesome) article breaking down how THC and CBD affect sleep.

https://blog.eightsleep.com/how-cannabis-affects-your-sleep/

I used to smoke before sleeping every night, but did find I wasn't well rested. Stopped it, had the weirdest dreams for like 2 weeks... then started sleeping WAY better.

Now I take valerian root and melatonin most nights.

Haven't tried CBD though... any help here?

Do you use sleep aids regularly (more than 3-4x per week), and if so what?

I don't take anything, I sleep really well. I do sometimes like listening to sleep meditation/ASMR while falling asleep though.

I've heard good things about CBD and melatonin for sleep though.

I truly don't think you've ever had a bad take on this platform lol, I think I've agreed with all of your comments.

Sleep meditation/ASMR is the most relaxing way to fall asleep. I need to do it more.

Hahaha, thank you. Something about great minds...ย

I love it. I use Medito for sleep (and other) meditation and enjoy it, it's free and user friendly. I've just recently gotten into ASMR for sleep, it truly is super relaxing. A little weird to people who don't understand what it is, and a lot of people think ASMR consists of those gross eating/chewing videos which I hate.ย

I'll have to look into that.ย

Yeah, that's originally what I thought all ASMR was, but then learned it can be normal things too. My buddy blew up on TikTok and IG this last year for his ASMR cooking videos. Very relaxing to be honest. He'll toss on some jazz in the background to go with the cooking noises.ย

I picked some other herb thing, but it's Ambien.ย

Melatonin gave me vivid nightmares and sleep paralysis so I don't mess with it anymore.

No shit?ย  That's crazy - if I may ask... what is sleep paralysis like?ย  I've never actually talked with someone who'd dealt with it.

Iโ€™ve experienced sleep paralysis too many times to count for as long as I can remember. Itโ€™s horrifying. Seeing the room and trying so hard to scream, but nothing... felt better about it once I was able to put a name to it and learned other people experience it, too. Still not pleasant though.

My wife is an acupuncturist and herbalist, so I have an in-house consultant to help me dial in the right mix of things. If you need help getting to sleep and prefer a natural way to do it, work with an herbalist and they'll sort you out.

PSA: Cannot promise the solutions will always taste good.

What are some of the more commons herbs your wife suggests?

It's all personalized, so I'd be doing her work a disservice if I made any suggestions. However, as far as supplements go, magnesium and zinc are two that I'd tell anyone to add into their pre-sleep routines.

Attended a super insightful talk while in college about this subject and remember a Medical Marijuana doctor saying THC doesn't disturb your sleep cycle what disturbs it is going from being high to being sober which disrupts REM sleep. The Doctor's solution was playing around with edibles until you find the perfect amount that will keep you high throughout the night. The problem with this is edibles are mad expensive so I like to give myself an hour or two of not consuming any THC before I go to sleep so the effects wear off and I don't miss out on REM sleep.

I was using the valerian root and melatonin combo and it was super effective but if I didn't keep my sleep schedule in a routine then it really threw me off the next day. Also, I had crazy dreams from the valerian root.

I found these gummies at a local dispensary and wow are they amazing, plus you don't get that unrested THC hangover feeling. I take 1 or even sometimes 1/2 depending on how tired I am.ย

How does valerian root affect you and your sleep cycle personally? I've read varying opinions but haven't spoken to someone who actually uses it.

Personally, I love CBD to sleep. I'll use gummies here and there but not nightly, as sometimes I wake up too groggy.

I love drinking tea with valerian root - it helps me have a great sleep. Occasionally I find it a bit hard to wake up in the morning but most of the time it's perfect and I feel super refreshed. It's really helped when I suffer from cycles of insomnia.

I guess I should note that I had a few crazy dreams...but I also have crazy dreams when I don't take anything so hard to draw a correlation

I hit a wall with Melatonin after taking it for years. It just sort of stopped working. If you really can't sleep, I highly recommend seeing a specialist. I know a few different people who were able to fix their shit as a result. Psychiatrists can help in that regard too.

CAREFUL using melatonin. Apparently you can become dependent on it because the body will stop producing its own supply.
I concurr with weed making me wake up feeling tired and not properly rested.
Alcohol might help initially getting to sleep, but also makes it harder to get up the next day.

Ice baths work wonders - 10 to 15 minutes in an ice bath (just get out of the bath before you stop shivering, otherwise you are headed for hypothermia) then into bed and I sleep like a baby. Best nights sleep ever.

An ice bath sounds absolutely terrible ๐Ÿ˜† I know people swear by stuff like that - same with cold water for the last two min of the shower, but thereโ€™s no way I could make myself do that. Horrible. Lol

The idea behind the icebath before bed is to lower body temperature. It has the same sleep promoting benefits as having a hot bath (in theory), but in practice an ice bath works much better for me.

The cold shower I think has more to do with fat-burning. There is a type of fat ("brown fat") which controls the speed with which you burn body fat. It is generally concentrated around the upper back and you can increase the amount of brown fat that you have by cooling this area - hence cold shower.

Of course if you stand in a cold shower for long enough and water is cool enough, it will do practically the same job as an icebath.

Really interesting. Iโ€™ve read (in all my attempts to find things that help or hinder sleep) that taking a hot bath too close to bed can negatively affect your sleep. Wish I could remember the reason why. You definitely seem more versed in the idea than me. Though falling asleep isnโ€™t my issue - itโ€™s staying asleep. My first response to you was around 3 or 4 this morning after having woke up at 2:30. The sun was up when I fell back asleep. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

I've got some lovely PTSD issues from my time in the sand box mixed with nerve pain so sleep ND I aren't on good terms.ย

That being said I've used melotonin, thc, cbd, booze and many other things.ย

The later are horrible for the body. But CBD and thc have helped with the pain and allow me to at least get a few uninterrupted hours plus I feel rested. Much better than all the pills the VA have tried. If you can get away with just using melotonin I envy you.

I have sporadic sleep issues, some nights horrible, some nights great. Trying to avoid using alcohol for this because I know it helps you fall asleep but at the same time prevents your sleep from being restful.

Right now I'll use melatonin if I'm feeling restless before going to bed. If I have a lot of trouble getting to sleep or waking up in the middle of the night I'll take some 2:1 CBD:THC gummies which helps me get and stay to sleep.ย

Curious to learn what the article has to say because I haven't been doing this for that long.

I only like smoking or eating Sativa THC products so I have to make sure that I don't smoke too close to going to bed. I find if I get enough exercise in during the day I can get right to sleep - if not I'm tossing and turning

There's a herb called Ashwagandha. It helps increase melatonin and reduces stress. Must try.ย

Melatonin almost every night to go to sleep. That's after running most days, working a full eight hours, and cutting the coffee at 2 pm.ย
