Vacation...what vacation?

I think salespeople are always known to never take many breaks or holidays because it's always DEALS DEALS DEALS, even when on holiday always checking emails or doing calls. How many of you are actually like that when you're off on vacation or just have time off? And why are you like that (or not like that)?

Interested to hear everyone's thoughts!

How often do you check your work emails when on vacay?

There is a good thread (posted below) with some good tips for how to manage both work and PTO. Unfortunately it sounds like a lot of us are all in the same boat, it is really hard to truly unplug with deals in flight, inbounds, etc. It is something I am working on getting better at doing.

Out of office up, Slack deleted from my phone. If you're calling me that means the world must be burning down.

Never, my vacation is my own time. I work to live, not the other way around. I just make sure to wrap up anything I can before I leave, my OOO is on, active prospects know I won't be around for that time period, and that my sales manager is aware of what's going on with my pipeline so he can step in and assist a prospect if necessary (I leave his contact details in my ooo.) If my manager had a pressing question that couldn't wait, he can call me.

We're salespeople, not brain surgeons or military generals. The world will be fine even if we step away from our desks for a bit. I've never heard of someone losing a deal because they went on vacation...

I completely agree with you! However, at my old workplace it was all 'take time off...but also reply to that email or do that call' so it's interesting and also refreshing to know that there are people out there in the same industry that can switch off and have a life outside of the office!

If you're expected to think about work and do work, how is that a vacation? It's a poor policy to have...we have stressful jobs and people need to be able to disconnect in order to perform well and not hate their job...

My team has excellent support for each other when we're on PTO. Our manager divides things between us so things are handled properly for the person on leave.

I’ll usually check it in the morning at lunch and then after dinner. Unless I’m waiting on a contract in which case I will drag down on gmail until I get the notification that it’s been signed

I'm in the process of breaking myself from this habit. The last year has taught me the true importance of disconnecting for mental health.

I try to stay away from work. I just check my mails in the morning or evening. My colleague handels everything coming in.

I never mind checking the email, I just don't respond too much. I like to look in case there is gold in there.

Usually once a day with first thing in the morning or that night if I do not get to it in the morning. Even though I am on vacation I still feel like it is my responsibility to check in on work.

I think everybody needs at least a proces. But probably every successful sales person has the mix of both.
