Vaccine Mandates by Employers - Looking for Info

I work in HR services (selling those services to be clear - I'm NOT in HR and don't care that you need a day off because your goldfish died and your manager didn't accept that that was bereavement leave worthy) and vaccines are an increasingly hot topic of debate. Clients are asking more and more about mandating employees and contractors that go on-site be vaccinated.

Looking for salespeoples' perspective. Feel free to comment with your opinions on the matter but lets be respectful of differing views please.

Is your employer mandating vaccines?

For us, if you want to return to the office you need a vaccine. If you don't have the shot, you have to get tested daily.

Sidenote and potentially inflammatory comment. Vaccine mandates have been around forever, this is nothing new. Get the fucking shot and move on.

Daily testing is intense but less than a full vax mandate so I can certainly follow the logic around testing. With vaxxed people's cases rising it seems like testing might be increasingly important. Until they sort out the whole booster thing I guess.

I wouldn't work for a company that would put me in a position to be around unvaccinated people. My employer is mandating vaccines for any in-person event of any kind.

Totally understand your position. Is anyone getting let go for not being vaxxed out of curiosity? This is such a crazy issue in the HR space right now, I'm curious around how far companies are going at this stage.

I agree that its a deeply personal choice. Issue is, now employees are asking their employers to institute mandates (that I'm not comfortable with either). I don't like mandates for most things, but its supremely nuanced. I also don't like it landing on employers. If Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau want to mandate vaccines, do it and deal with any political/legal fallout. Don't say employers with x amount of employees and in y sectors need to force their employees.

Mainly the focus of conversation here has been around care companies etc.

I live on the United States' dick: Florida.

We have no rules and we defy the other 49 states in many ways.
To keep it short, my company is a strange culmination of ideologies and we have landed in a spot of muh freedom while also providing something very tied to this pandemic.

Everyone in the office can do whatever they want. No masks, testing, or mandates. I have gone ahead on my own and gotten it, but mainly because I don't want to get any old folks in the family sick.
I work remotely...so I'm the black sheep already in the sales team.

If you go to ANY restaurant in my city, you will find it as packed as ever. Full of retired baby boomers together like sardines, no masks (mostly). Fall and Winter will only get more packed.

But as the pandemic gets worse, my sales will continue to increase.

If you manage to wander into the everglades, there are alligators, pythons, and confirmed Nile Crocodiles (released from people who brought them in from Miami).
Also on the southwest coast there are naturally occurring saltwater crocodiles too

I have never even visited our office, which is halfway across the country, and I honestly don't know what our policy is, though I got my shots the minute I was eligible.    I would support them if they determined that you could be let go if you didn't get the vaccine.  Honestly, I'm totally bemused by the pushback.

Choice and freedom are certainly a part of the equation. In Canada, there is a segment waiting for Novavax that will be made in Canada and Medigo that was developed in Canada. They're supposed to be approved any time now. Right or wrong, that's their choice and I feel uncomfortable that this has been left up to employers (for the most part) to decide. I hear ya, brother.

Commenting on my own post, yeah I'm that guy. Anyone concerned about the precedent of employers asking this stuff? Its illegal in Denmark, for example, but being mandated by the U.S. Its a pandemic, things are crazy, I get it for sure. But anyone worried about overreach in the future?

A vaccine requirement is nothing new in the US.  We've required them to attend school, the military hasn't met a vaccine it doesn't like, and it's been determined to be Constitutional.

Overreach...how?

I'm talking strictly about employers mandating employees share medical info. You can't ask a person's age, whether someone is pregnant, and lots of other things. It's real murky around labor laws. In Canada, vaccines have only been mandated to attend public school or the military that I know of. Not sure about other jurisdictions.
Sunbunny31

Sr Sales Executive 🐰
Yeah, vaccination status is not a HIPAA violation in that regard.  It's not really sharing medical info, in that the reason for the vaccination is not disclosed.

Frankly, it literally is a greater good/let's get this behind us as much as and as quickly as we can issue that I HOPE is a once in a lifetime event, and I'm not concerned as much about the slippery slope argument with it.

CCP

Fair point. In Canada a lot of people in both provincial and federal governments are saying employers can ask yet they haven't changed the labor laws that are super strict. There are a lot of restrictions around what employers can ask employees and candidates so we're in unchartered territory. All for 2022 not being another shit show of a year but I feel like it's going to vary and stick around like the flu has the last century (not saying COVID is like the flu just that the flu is endemic and we need a different flu shot every year). Seems like variants are popping up more and more. I hope I'm wrong and these vaccines cut it but I wouldn't wager either way at this point. It's an insanely dynamic and fluid situation.

Well, considering that here in the US, it's the unvaccinated that are jamming up the ICUs, while the vaccinated are generally sniffling and getting over it, the sooner we get to some semblance of knocking this thing down to annoying and occasional and more similar to the flu in how we handle it, I'm good.

For sure. The breakthrough cases are concerning, though, due to potential variants (apparently, totally not a virologist). Weird data coming out of Israel. I think testing and treatment will also be really important. We can certainly take a multipronged approach if we need to and figure out boosters as needed.

I'm anticipating something similar. It's easier to manage when employees can WFH. Many companies I'm talking to have warehouse workers or manufacturing so that's a whole other ballgame when it comes to vaccine policy. Kind of a pick your poison scenario.

For current employees they are pushing the vaccine, but if you elect not to, you have to submit a negative test every week that you will be seeing anyone (clients or coworkers). However, new employees must be vaccinated.

Interesting that there are two sets of rules. I can see that complicating things unless your company eventually just goes with everyone must be vaccinated. There's also a financial cost for the tests that many companies are taking into consideration.

In this market no one can afford to lose employees, I think that's maybe where it comes from. They have made it abundantly clear that they want people to get vaccinated, but it's a big org so a sweeping move like that could mean thousands of people choose to leave. We're mostly all working from home still anyway so they probably aren't looking to disrupt too many when they don't have to.
CCP

Great point. The talent shortage is real for sure. We're in a similar position but my org hasn't formally announced the plan but a plan is being formulated. The flip side to mandating and losing employees is not mandating and people who feel unsafe leave anyway regardless of testing. Not easy waters to navigate when people are so divided and there are strong views all around.

Being remote is great now but eventually in person meetings and events will become more common. Less common than before COVID I think but more than now. The unvaccinated will need to consider that at some point in places with vax passports especially where you can't meet the team for a drink.

Is there a huge difference in workplace & Vaccines in the US compared to Europe? I wouldn't want to speak for everyone but the majority of Europe (mainly the UK) have got the vaccine and companies don't really need to have this debate as their employees have got the vaccine.

However, large companies with thousands of employees have introduced the 'no jab, no job' policy. But, it's rare so not really in the news.

Really depends on the country. The UK, Denmark and Sweden are lifting all restrictions as examples. France has a vax or testing policy, and the list goes on. I'm in Quebec, Canada where we have 81% fully vaxxed and companies (and gov't) are mandating vaccines in some cases or don't know what to do/what is legal in others. Seems that vaccination levels aren't enough for employers to not mandate something (vax or test or WFH 100%) given the variants and general uncertainty. I used to think if we got to x% vaccinated rate, things would go back to normal. But they're not. Fully vaxxed people still need to wear masks, restaurants can only accept fully vaxxed but still can't open to full capacity. Its wildly complicated to understand and employers are struggling to figure it out.

Yeah I hear you. For people that are now doing face-to-face meetings or events it's different. But I think the getting tested model is valid since you can apparently still spread while vaxxed. If there were no financial implications, I think rapid testing for everyone (vaxxed and not) would be safest. Not sure it's possible, though.
