Who gets stuck with the crappy verticals? If you do it by region everyone gets a fair shake.

You make a good point there, @braintank. Thankfully the companies I have been with don't tolerate crappy verticals too long until there is some sort of shift which can be tricky as well.

Do you think with regions/territories, you should live there?

It isn't necessary but it doesn't hurt.

I'd rather be every vertical in a geographical territory. I'd be bored with just one.

I've never run into this before mostly because the product that I'm selling doesn't change, just the people I talk with. Having vertical instead of geographical gives me a variety of different people with backgrounds and cultures that I can learn from but also having a lot of the same industry specific issues!

I know that wouldn't really work for my company. The average deal size in best vertical would be 10x the deal size of the second best vertical. Maybe it could work for other industries/companies, but would be very tough to make it even for ours

Super fair! It was like that at a previous company I worked for and those verticals were considered Enterprise and given to more tenured reps with much higher quotas.

That is a good idea. But I do feel like it would be difficult for a rep if they were "promoted" to enterprise and had to become a master of enterprise selling and a new industry. Is that a valid concern, or was it pretty seamless?

Honestly, promotions into Enterprise were pretty rare. We did however have โ€œjunior AEโ€ positions that would get paired with a more tenured rep usually in that vertical/situation to learn the lay of the land.

Ah okay. That makes more sense then.ย

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I've worked within both at the same time. I'll take the vertical if it's done in a way that makes sense and the product fits. But having been in a vertical with a questionable product fit, it can be really challenging.

The only issue is the verticals can be really good or really bad depending on the product fit and size of the vertical.ย

But yes specialisation in one vertical makes you a lot better at knowing and identifying their pains.ย  + Itยดs better for your network

my company all sells to the same vertical so we break it out by territory and size of the customer

I have no time for "New England" nice (aka I won't drop 30 f-bombs at you when I tell you directions). Also, use your blinker and get the fuck off the highway if you don't know where you're going. Also, put your phone in your god damn pocket, I'm trying to walk here.

Shitty territories exist. Change my mind (or take a poll lol)
