Virtual Zoom "Happy Hour'

My previous post was about projects I'm being tapped to do outside of my normal duties. One that I can't seem to get out of is "owning" our Virtual Holiday Happy Hour. They gave everyone a $50 gift card to an alcohol delivery service and half the company is sober, so that's a bit awkward.

Looking for ideas and inspiration on how to handle a completely virtual holiday party that is only going to be an hour long next week.

Pains:

  • early evening for east coasters, mid afternoon for west coasters
  • only an hour long (could maybe make it longer, but ... should i actually?)
  • budget has been denied
  • ~20 people all via zoom
  • i don't think we don't know each other well enough to do a secret santa (fully remote)

I appreciate you all in advance and will keep you posted on what happens in the end!

For the sake of your employees' happiness, do them a favor and don't do a Zoom happy hour. It's depressing, and nobody likes doing these. The gift cards should suffice in place of no in-person party.

You could try one of those online games ( https://www.jackboxgames.com/)

or

Just let everyone enjoy their drinks and an hour of free time.

^^On the second thought, jackbox is fun as shit so maybe do this but don't do it after hours and just let them have fun during the day

Send everyone a gift card for dinner and/or booze and let them enjoy an hour or two alone.

If you feel like you have to do something, party games are not a terrible idea.  Check out Kahoot.com and the event/team section.  Maybe there's something there that will be appropriate and fun (enough).   I believe there's a free trial period, so you don't have to blow your non-existent budget.

We did some quiz recently for a group of 30 people, same source that Sunbunny shared - Kahoot and it was way to fun (you must have a great host to make it worth it)

I feel a little of your pain here! We're an all remote company as well & we used to happy hours, virtual lunches, & stuff like that all the time. It's hard when it's a big group of people. Something we started doing instead was events with a company called Onsite.Fun. They have a lot of different options of things you can do! For a larger group the game ones would probably be fun!

Yikes this is a real tough spot. I’m so against virtual happy hours.
But some sort of game will be your best bet and just hope the team is cool and plays along.
Keep it to 45 min and call it a night

I mean, if you HAVE to do it then maybe force everyone to watch the same show/movie and issue drinks for specific lines or actions.

Bonus if it is a show or film that fits your industry or market.

No helpful advice for you, but GREAT name. Wow.

I even know the combination to your luggage!

Update: I kept it to only an hour; and since half the company doesn't drink, I'm doing a virtual white elephant and a "how well do you know your coworkers" kind of game where everyone tells me a unique holiday tradition and everyone guesses who it is. (we're fully remote and most of us haven't met the others in person, so easy way to break the ice)

If you are buying alcohol for your team then that's fine if not then it's just another meeting on the books.

Say you can't make it and keep the gift card.
