VP Sales JD

I'm trying to find a new VP Sales for my startup. 2 things:

  • Do VP sales even read JD's?
  • This person is going to be my boss - what are some great things to call out in the JD to make sure we hire a great sales leader?

FWIW - I'm the Director of Sales of a small sales team, and we're looking for someone with experience scaling sales orgs, which isn't me lol

Serious question: why are you recruiting your boss?

LOL great Q. I'm a first time sales leader, just got promoted. We're going to hire quite a bit in the coming months and I don't have the experience with that. Hoping to grow into it, and if I kick ass we might not need someone else.

Got itβ€”been there myself. However, your CEO should be recruiting and hiring a VP candidate. It’s a complete waste of time and a conflict of interest if you’re searching for someone that you’d report to. Piece of advice: find a mentor and build your skillset. Don’t let someone come in and change the course of what you’re building. I didn’t want that and I fought my CEO on hiring a revenue leader. I won, and we grew 3X under my leadership.

That’s really hard to answer. Depends on your plans, industry, product, what stage you’re in, culture, everything basically. It might make sense to get some outside advice here to point you into the right direction. Make sure you get someone who really knows what it takes to scale sales orgs in whatever stage you’re in. They oftentimes stay onboard until you’ve found your VP which is great as they can handover directly

Thanks for this. We're expecting some pretty big growth. The founder is super well known in the security space as a thought leader and researcher so to date most of our growth has been inbound and I'm concerned that once we've capitalized we won't be prepared for outbounding or have the people in place to support prospecting. I'm hoping we can find something like what you're describing, but in the next 6 months or so.

This seems like a strange task for your position to be honest, start up or not.

I'm basically writing the JD, not necessarily doing the hiring. My CRO has a PMM background, so he's leaning on me to set the right expectations. Mainly so we don't land a douchebag.

not landing a douchebag is one of the trickier parts of hiring lol.Β

I’d highly recommend utilizing a recruiting agency for this role or leveraging your network. VP of sales is rarely reading a JD IMO.

Thanks - I'll bring that up with my CRO. They want to leverage our companies network, but everyone I know that could fit the bill is already placed.
