Got it—been there myself. However, your CEO should be recruiting and hiring a VP candidate. It’s a complete waste of time and a conflict of interest if you’re searching for someone that you’d report to. Piece of advice: find a mentor and build your skillset. Don’t let someone come in and change the course of what you’re building. I didn’t want that and I fought my CEO on hiring a revenue leader. I won, and we grew 3X under my leadership.

This is legit a great piece of feedback. I've got some great mentors in my circle. Ideally, that's exactly what we'd do. We're at a stage where I think there's an opportunity to do what you did, I just need to be in the role long enough to show some success. I've been doing the role untitled since I got here so I've got some credibility built already. Plus, our lead investor is a big fan. I performed really well at his former startup that was a multi-billion dollar exit. He got me set up with these co-founders after my last acquisition.

How did it go?
Any update for us?

I'm in a similar situation.
Scale-up barely had B2B revenue before I joined and is on track to grow to 1000% annual revenue under my 'lead' even though I'm not mentioned as the B2B lead.

They're looking for a B2B Manager to lead the unit, but I believe I can do it with some mentoring and sharpened skill set.

Any advice?

That’s really hard to answer. Depends on your plans, industry, product, what stage you’re in, culture, everything basically. It might make sense to get some outside advice here to point you into the right direction. Make sure you get someone who really knows what it takes to scale sales orgs in whatever stage you’re in. They oftentimes stay onboard until you’ve found your VP which is great as they can handover directly

Thanks for this. We're expecting some pretty big growth. The founder is super well known in the security space as a thought leader and researcher so to date most of our growth has been inbound and I'm concerned that once we've capitalized we won't be prepared for outbounding or have the people in place to support prospecting. I'm hoping we can find something like what you're describing, but in the next 6 months or so.

I'm basically writing the JD, not necessarily doing the hiring. My CRO has a PMM background, so he's leaning on me to set the right expectations. Mainly so we don't land a douchebag.
