Network internally with the AD you would roll into as an AE. Shadow farther into the cycle with the AR you currently support. Practice disco calls, and see if you can let your AE let you run a few.

At this stage, when moving from SDR/BDR to AE, most interviews want to see if you can do accurate discovery and push for next steps. They know you haven’t been closing for decades so focus on the fundamentals first!

You need to have one foot in the BDR room and the other in the AE room. Watch demo recordings/listen to discovery calls etc. also, make sure to crush numbers at your current role. When it comes time to interview, you need to demonstrate that you’ve had the initiative in learning the next steps in the sales process and the track record to exceed goal. Good luck!!

One of my AEs let me run disco calls for some small clients. Ask them if you contribute more on the calls for smaller clients

If you want to be AE in your current company, ask your manager/HR what they expect from you. Be patient but with a sense of urgency.

Alternatively, if you have a year or so of demonstrated performance (especially at a solid name) start looking for SMB AE roles or Inside Sales Rep positions. You won't get full AE pay, but you'll be in a closing role. Smaller companies are often willing to take a chance on an BDR/SDR. If you stay at your current company, you're on their designated promotion timeline which is probably slowwwwwww.

Why would you ever not want to switch? Establish a plan with your manager to get there

Form strong relationships with your current AEs and they will train/guide you as if you are their own.

Solve problems. Reach out for help. Then send an email to your team and manager of the problem and how you solved it. Take the initiative.
