Type of wave is important. I tend to flash just the hand up with no wagging with a confident, "adios". But that matches my personality. 

If flapping your hand about like a dying pidgeon while sobbing and shrieking, "never leave me!" matches your personal style and doesn't make things awkward, have at it, and congrats.
