WFH reimbursement/perks/unfairness

At first I was pumped about working from home:

My wife was pregnant when the pandemic started and we saw an opportunity to replace commute with more quality time with our baby.

Now I'm just fat and constantly thinking about all the money that I'm now having to expense and that the company is saving:

-Rent

-Electricity

-Equipment maintenance (I had to get a new computer and ended up spending a ton of money on a rig I can also mine and game on :/)

-Internet

Has any of you received like an incentive or something to help with the WFH expenses?

I used to get a "transportation aid" that got rebranded "connection aid" but it's not enough.

Lastly, I feel I work more because when 5 pm comes around, I'm still stuck in this chair trying to get a bit more done.

Does your company provide an incentive for WFH?

I used to think this was a perk when the pandemic started. I'm not so sure anymore... Am I being a little B?

Itโ€™s a perk to be gifted back 2+ hours of your day in commuting. For me this has meant the ability to go to the gym again.

depending on where you live (Canada + USA) You can carve out a section of your home for WFH and deduct the proportion of electricity/mortgage/rent.

get yourself a nice tax refund.

RIPI didn't know that. They made it easy for Canadians. Took a multiplier of how many days you WFH and it works out to more than the long formula.ย

Hmm I've heard of this at some companies, but never as a WFH benefit, interesting. Would be cool to accumulate them and use them for groceries.

I got $800 as a WFH stipend. I already had a standing desk prior and some decent headphones, so I just saved it.

that's sweet! I nice stipend would be good for us folks who were working at kitchen tables. I ended up investing in a nice desk and chair but work wouldn't let me expense

I don't understand, what is adding such a drain on your expenses due to WFH vs the office? You would have had to pay rent, internet and everything else anyways.

The computer thing should be covered by your work, they should provide you with tools you need to do your job. If you're a contractor then you can lease computers under your business and claim the interest on taxes.

In Canada WFH is a nice tax break. We can claim a portion of rent, repairs, mortgage interest, utilities, etc. if you work more than 50% of the time. I did this last year and saved a ton of tax.

Well, not really, my place is small and I need to turn the studio into a room for my baby :/

Also, while I was already paying for internet, we had to upgrade our plan to avoid laggy connections while everyone is video conferencing, and being home for longer, using the machines, increases the utility bills.

So it's not like "the expenses were already there in the first place".

Love the way WFH is regulated in Canada, hope we can learn something from you fellas :D

Make the case to your boss about these cost increases and ask them to cover them. Seems fair to me.ย

they turned our cell phone stipend to an internet stipend...50 bucks a month. Not too sure how much that gets you but in Canada it doesn't really do the trick....nothing else. They are definitely saving tons on office space, office supplies, lunches and snacks but have not shared it back with the employees....

WFH is a perk. But they give me a small net allowance for doing so. That is not taxed so a nice benefit.ย

If they sound like they aren't a complete dick, can always ask for contract end date. That way you can set a mark a month or 2/3 from that end date to reach back out.
