WFH, WHY are execs obsessed with us all returning to the office?

I am much more productive working from home. I don't need to be in the office. Why does leadership insist on us being in the office? I am all phone and email. What is with this rigidity about being in the office?

A few different reasons.

- Old school and don't see the benefits/don't believe that work can be done from home.

- Micromanagers who want to be able to keep tabs on their employees.

- Some employees have demonstrated that they're not as effective working from home and their productivity/work quality is suffering.

- Exec is an extrovert and works best in the office and thinks everyone is like them.

Agree on all these and I am not saying no office ever again.ย  I completely work under a micro manager and for sure old school mentality. I wonder if the landscape has truly changed enough that it is just time to move on.

It's tough to work for someone with completely different mindset than you. Could be worth looking elsewhere, especially if working remotely is important to you.

I'm seeing the opposite, and wanting it too. As a BDR who started during covid, I desperately want to get back to being in the office. I find that the BDR position is so much better when you're around your colleagues, learning from each other, competing with each other, and just hanging out with each other. I think it really depends on what stage you're at in your career.

It's interesting to hear you want to go back in your role. I started my first BDR job in the office, moved to my current role remotely and there is no way in hell you could get me to go back into the office and return to an office/the "BDR culture" way of doing things. I feel like my job is less miserable and feels less entry level than when we were in the office. WFH, for lyf pleaseย

I work for a very large org, but the culture makes it feel very small. I'm a BDR and I've had casual conversation with our CCO and VP of Sales. It's created a really nice feeling of comradery and collaboration. And there's a huge emphasis on all new hires fitting that cultural mold. So I guess that plays a big hand in my enjoyment of the office!

Boomer micromanaging garbage.ย

Look at all that money they spend on unused real estate and say to you they can't afford to raise your pay.ย

Miss me with that bullshit ๐Ÿคฌ

ROI doesn't apply exclusively to buying software. Execs also what ROI on things like their real estate investments. They got that big office in the right building for "you"...so you better be using it!

I think that they think you're at home slacking. Which isn't the case. But they are reflecting what they would do.ย

They want people in the office, so they can go coast to useless in person internal meetings, so they can say "not right now, I'm very busy"ย

I feel for you. Stay Strong. Eventually we will be CEOs/CCOs... bide your time.ย

If they are finance backgrounded, ask what the ops costs are for the building, and if we went remote/hybrid how much less sqft they'd need and you can realize the savings usually into a significant number.ย

- you learn from others more easily in an office setting.
- theyโ€™re paying for an office space and they expect you to use it
- they donโ€™t trust you even though youโ€™ve WFH for the past year.

I donโ€™t blame there because thereโ€™s an aspect of comfort when you see someone is working, itโ€™s easy to assume someone is slacking off unfortunately. Wouldnโ€™t take it personal itโ€™s just human nature but I do hear you

At my company it's been a clash of old school meets new school. Proud to say we are more progressive than I thought and COVID really forced the issue. Some leaders inside the org are still rigid on in the office at X time and back by X time daily, but we've put metrics in place to earn flex by both tenure and performance.

I think @funcouponsย is spot on. A few bad apples ruin the bunch and they worry productivity will fall off. Also leadership is a bunch of extroverts (myself included). I love team culture and remote is isolating for me. I have to check myself a lot to remember not everyone operates this way.ย

You could work for a micromanager possibly. Could be to build comradery within your team. I know when I lead a team of inside sales reps it was helpful for them to hear me on the phones, and I could hear them and help make changes in real time. Much less of aย  learning curve for the new people.ย

But if your team is tenured and doesn't need babysitting, sell the office and pay me more is my motto.ย

i think a hybrid model of some sort could work for this, downsize the office space and allow flexibility.ย

Many managers are control freaks, and when you are working at home they lose control and it drives them crazy.

Also, many managers simply don't think you are working if they can't see you.
