What are best practices for starting a new role in a new segment? (AE)

Any advice on how to hit the ground running selling into a new segment?

potential answers could be: learn the product first, learn the industry first, learn who to sell to, learn which companies are best... F if I know!!

I'd hope this advice can apply to most new hires, but in my case, I'll be selling to D2C companies trying to help them w/ supply chain.

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
If you don't feel like you're annoying, you're not asking enough questions.

This so much. People already think sales reps are annoying. Make it true.

This is great Advice! I'll add on to this by saying that you'd want to ask questions that inspire them to pause and think for the answer.

For sure, if you have a great question throw it out there!

Don't sleep on the first month being no stupid questions month either. If you're in a new industry they'd much rather prefer you ask questions about anything you don't understand instead of not knowing.

Asked a lot of 'stupid' questions myself when I started in logistics.

Learn the ICP and the basic value prop of the product. Once you have those two down you can get on the phone and start learning the nuances as you go.

Second, find a teammate that's been there for a bit and ask them to run through questions and provide feedback while your on ramping. This way you can make mistakes, but you'll have a safety net to help you out.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Did you get promoted or have you sold before? That's going to make the advice waaaay different depending on answer.

To add to your list above...  Talk to at least 1 leader from every business unit in your company (Operations, Finance, IT, Engineering, whoever else is out there) and find out how you work with them, what's important to them, and how they interact with customers.  Then ask them what their advice to you would be as a Salesperson.  Congrats on the new role!
