What are some questions you would recommend asking when interviewing for a new sales position?

Would love questions that are open ended and really get the person that will I will be interviewing with to talk about the new sales role I’m interviewing for because I really want to make sure it’s a good fit for myself long term (2-5 years). Would love to hear what you all recommend asking!


For the record I already have my own in mind based off of my wants, experience and expectations.

What makes our product/service better than what the competition offers?

What would you expect from me in the first 30, 60, and 90 days in the role?

What kind of video games do you play? 

If they like strategy/building games they are all about that delayed gratification. 

Shooters/RPGs - quick gratification focused. 

If they don't play - ask what they do, in their spare time, when they can't be outdoors.

Builders/Puzzlers/Cleaners - you can gain a lot of personality from that kind of stuff vs the interview self they present. 

If I was hiring an extrovert with long cycles, I want a delayed grat candidate. 
If we are doing high churn/movement I want that shooter player who needs those wins to motivate.

Just read this from the otherside of the table - whoops.

Ask what their Hasselhoff baywatch rep/ae/bdr looks like. The ideal. Talking filming baywatch and releasing a pop album in Germany Hoff. 

No joke, doing this once landed me the job. Let my personality shine through.

Ask about industry trends and how you can become in expert in the vertical/industry you're going to be selling into. I would do research beforehand and ask something like "I noticed XYZ is happening in the [insert industry] space, how does that affect this company and how might it impact my sales cycle?"

What are some reasons you’ve seen someone struggle in this position?

How would you describe your management style? 

Is your local team culture representative of the greater company culture?

How do I get paid? (Please please never leave an interview not understanding this. If figuring out your commission is harder than calculas, run!)

How long has your company been in the local market? 

How do territories work? Do I ever get new territory or is it one set area for a long time? 

Besides formal training, what does on the job Day to day training and development look like?
