What Are You Wearing?

This question is specific for Zoom calls...assuming you use video on calls.

Two category buckets: Internal and External

Me personally:

Internal calls - I can justify more casual dress; t-shirt/sweatshirt...unless it's with my boss or leadership and then I'll put on a polo.

External calls - Always either putting on company branded apparel or a polo/button shirt.

And I always avoid a hat...it at least gives the appearance that I put some kind of effort to look presentable, even if I'm in a t-shirt on a team call.

Sidenote: I use a halo-style light for my video calls. It really helps improve the overall quality, regardless of how well lit your space is already.

BONUS QUESTION: What do you wear for a video interview?

Honestly I wear a hoodie and/or a t-shirt on all calls, internal and external. I sell to tech in Silicon Valley, nobody is dressed up on Zoom calls.

Had a call with a prospect who was outside in a tank tanning. There are no rules anymore it seems.

I agree...the threshold for "presentability" has definitely changed! At least he still had a tank top on.

And to your point, I also sell into tech/dev/security. Most of them never even think about getting on video to begin with. And when they do, it's in a dark room and they usually have on a gaming headset for their microphone. 😉

Usually a button up on top if anything is outward facing, if only internal facing then I can wear whatever really. The company is pretty laid back about that and trusts you'll dress how you need to based on your day.

I do make a point not to work in what I slept in, even if it's the same type of clothing.

No hats.
Collared shirt of some sort; polo, plaid, etc. No tie.
Hair presentable and not disheveled.

My clients are spending 20-30k on the minimum, upwards to 90k for a project that can take 3-4 months; so I try to have a professional first impression.

Video interviews that I've had I've been in mostly the same.

I usually wear a polo or casual button up, or long sleeve crew neck depending on the day. I personally feel better wearing something presentable and struggle to make calls in a hoodie a lot of the time. That being said my lower half is always shorts, joggers or sweats with slides on

I have so many internal and external calls sprinkled throughout the day that it would get annoying to keep having to change.  I just dress for the prospect/customer calls, which takes care of any other call I might have to join.

True...many times I have a t-shirt on for the day and either a polo or branded North Face jacket to throw on for external calls...unless it's for external Executive Leadership. Then I'll change (just the top) to a button style shirt.

Yeah same here, I just pick at the beginning of the day, nice shirt or not nice shirt, based on what's going on.

Plus, I'm in fintech, and bankers are always dressed for success.  That customer base sorta sets the tone for us here at the company.

At my last company I started "Dress Up Wednesdays" in the office and people would do cocktail attire. Kinda fun...kinda lost it's luster on hot summer days. Haha

Whatever work out top looks the least like a work out top when I put a sweater over it for internals or a blazer for externals.

What you're wearing doesn't matter as much as what you have behind you. I like to position a shelf full of inspirational books that intellectuals read right above my shoulder, so the prospect knows I'm a "reader".

If your prospect says something like "oh wow, you also read The Art of War? I'm on page 62" then you have basically won the deal.

This is a great topic, too...what people have in their background. Sometimes it's classy and sometimes it's down right shocking. I can't get into the Zoom digital backgrounds. I have book shelves with some books, pictures and degrees/awards.

I'm typically in shorts and the shirt depends on what kind of meetings are going on. For interviews I'll dress for the job especially in person. seems like you can get away with a lot more virtually.

You definitely get more cred if you look professional IMO. It’s hard to say though I’ve also interviewed in just a polo sitting in my car over zoom so hey who knows

I sell saas, I don’t think anyone gives a shit what you’re wearing anymore so I always wear lululemon’s with a t shirt. That said, if it’s a big day with an important demo or closing call I’ll put on a button down.

Jeans and a button down or polo every day. Don't want to have to check my schedule for whether I have external calls. I have a babyface so need to dress up a bit to be taken seriously sometimes with the larger clients. At the end of the day I switch out of the collared shirt, so mentally it puts me in a different place for a better work/life balance.

I am wearing. ton of athletic wear because its my go-to attire regardless, but one thing I've been enjoying and feel even a bit relieved about at the company I recently joined, is that Zoom calls are not video on by default. Customer facing or otherwise. I actually think this is a good standard practice. I use my professional headshot as my profile pic in Zoom, same one I have on LinkedIn and Google, so that is the static image when I am talking. Strong preference that way

I used to wear dress shirts all day everyday. But I have gotten a tad bit fat over the past few months and they have gotten tight. So now I only wear them for demos. Lol

Now I wear t-shirts for everything else.

Internal - hoodie and trackies (sweats if you're US)

External - semi zip top up top, trackies on the bottom. If you're showing off that part of your body you're on OnlyFans, not Teams.

I've been thinking about getting a halo - just need to wait for that sweet cash to hit my account

Personally, yes I do- I don't really care about birthdays, it's always seemed like an odd celebration after you turn 21. But that's just me- I don't like being gifted shit, sung too or called out because I rode the planet around the sun a few times.
