What are your best pattern interrupt frases?

I was having dinner with my family yesterday and the grown ups (still not considered one) were talking about politics, and like any debate there was a moment where everyone was talking over one another and who ever screamed the loudest was the one who was heard.

As a salesperson I tried to do a pattern interrupt and change the subject. No one heard me… which made me doubt my skills, so just another Monday… but now I turn to you, what are your best tips and tricks to get your prospects to lose their line of thought and give you their total attention?

I'm almost 30, a homeowner, successful salesperson and a generally all round responsible person - my family still do not consider me an adult.

I highly doubt there is anything wrong with your skills booboo.

Fuck the hate.

Same boat here. I only recently graduated to from the "kids" table to the adult table because my cousins are having so many damn kids. Still don't really take my opinions seriously despite the fact that I out-earn most of them lol.

One of my faves:

"Just send me an email."
"Sure thing, but if you're having trouble sleeping I have some better remedies for you than a white paper. Most people find that a 10-15 minute convo gives them a clearer picture of our solution."

"Just send me an email."
"Sure, what would you like to see on that email?"
I’ll go ahead and send you that at BLANK but I wouldn't want to disservice you with a genetic email, I know you are super busy and might not have a lot of time to look at it. What has worked with our current clients is actually set a 15 min screen share with BLANK, one of our account executives so we can deep dive into your specific needs and determine if we are the right solution for you.
How does next Tuesday or Thursday sound??

Exactly, the point is they weren't finished eating haha. That's a def pattern interrupt. In sales, it really depends on the situation. Sometimes honesty and vulnerability are the best.

The point was to stop the screaming, picking up the plates while before the finished eating would not solve that though. hahaha

I go with humor, gentle challenge, and fun facts. One of my greatest is:

- I'm not the right person
- I didn't think you were O.O

I open my cold calls with "I know it's never a good time for a cold call" or "I know cold calls are a bit weird and jarring" and both get a laugh + rapport pretty quickly.

Like many have said, follow up questions.

I also throw in jokes or puns all the time:

"send me an email"

"regular shipping or same day delivery?"

Any laugh buys one more question imo.

A nice pace while talking and a energétic tone of voice are a good replacement for body laguage, and even if it sounds dumb, smile while you talk

Burn Towns, Get Money
I've found in family political discussions, which can be quite heated at my family reunions (members of State Dept. Justice Dept. Federal Contractors, and some opinioned corporate employees), that a loud fart is a great operation interrupt.

Or break out chanting USA, USA, USA!

In all seriousness though, just standing up if everyone else is sitting and asking if anyone else would like a drink / refill is a good way to re-center everyone on dinner time not debate time.

In sales I usually fall on the sword and say HOLD ON GUYS, I missed that can we please back up.

I take hand written notes so I'll blame it on needing to actually write shit down. Customers seem to actually appreciate that I'm writing things down and usually back up and reset.

Then nominate someone to start talking where you want to re start the dialogue.

60% of the time, it works every time.

Regarding political debates and other impossible family conversations: I'd get up and walk away, especially if I'm not in the conversation. I have better things to do.

But for sales pattern interrupts:
"Don't you hate cold calls? Me too! So anyway, do you have 27 seconds to listen to why I'm cold calling you?"
Kinonez

Love it, I wouldn't ask for time though, sometimes it gives them an opportunity to hung up. perhaps; "Don't you hate cold calls? Me too! The reason for my call is..."
Thoughts?

I go with “I know it’s never a great time for a sales call, but is now a bad time?” The responses are either 1.) haha, what do ya got -> elevator pitch or however you typically start 2.) it is a bad time -> okay, do you have 30 seconds for the reason I’m calling? It’s never a good time for a sales call, so I would never ask that, but asking if it’s a bad time makes them feel like you’re not just bulldozing them. Also, there’s a good amount of people out there outside of sales who aren’t familiar with the term cold call. Everyone knows what a sales call is. Thoughts?

I wouldn't ask for time, nor is it's a bad time, you are given them a 50% of chance of leaving the call with every question, instead I explain the reason for the call and add value ASAP so I don't lose their interest.

I agree that you don’t ask for time. I think that what is more important is tonality and the confidence with which you say whatever opening line you decide works for you. I would guess that anyone who would hang up after you ask if it’s a bad time also probably isn’t going to hear you out on the reason for the call. Getting hung up on sucks but the only thing that really matters is getting to that next step(in most cases a follow up meeting) as much as possible

They won’t necessary hung up, but find a way out of the call. But yes, tonality makes a massive difference!

Pattern interrupts tend to very powerful on cold calls. Here is my favorite: "Full transparency, this is a cold call. Sometimes when I say that people hang up right away. Others take 30 seconds to roll the dice. I will leave that up to you." Then wait and see what they say/do before proceeding.
